About

Calexico and Iron & Wine in Concert

Calexico and Iron & Wine first made an artistic connection with In the Reins, the 2005 EP that brought Sam Beam, Joey Burns and John Convertino together. The acclaimed collaboration introduced both acts to wider audiences and broadened Beam's artistic horizons, but it was the shared experience of touring together in the tradition of Bob Dylan's "Rolling Thunder Revue" that cemented their bond. Their metaphorical roads diverged in the years that followed, but they kept in touch and cross-pollinated where they could. But although they often talked about rekindling their collaboration in the studio and on the stage, it wasn't until last year that their schedules aligned. Calexico and Iron & Wine have announced Years to Burn, their first full–length album together, available June 14th via City Slang in the UK/Europe and Sub Pop in the rest of the world.

    Excellent performance

    by g. b. on 2/18/20The Sylvee - Madison

The opening act of Madison Cunningham was really good. Such a wonderful voice with so much range. Calexico and Iron & Wine were musically excellent. Best show I’ve been to at Sylvee as finally for the sound balanced And I could hear the singers and understand their words - versus music not so ridiculously loud. Sylvee owners should learn from this one how to balance the sound. The members of the show really seemed to be having fun.

    Great Concert!

    by S. H. on 2/18/20The Sylvee - Madison

The music was amazing! The collaboration between Iron and Wine and Calexico was musical genius! The venue was intimate as we were able to stand in the front row but any spot in the Sylvee is a good spot! Can’t wait to see them again!

    Sound check?!

by gbgirl on 2/18/20The Sylvee - Madison

While we were completely stoked for this show, we were disappointed in the poor sound quality. We tried 4 different spots within the venue to try and hear Sam Beam speak in between songs, his mic was so low, you could barely understand him. The mic for the horn was barely (if even) on, and at the VERY END of the show the horn was FINALLY audible. Some of the best songs that really showcased the horn were a complete disappointment because we were essentially watching him play but not hearing him at all. It was also an odd show for a standing venue, but had their been better sound quality, that would have been a non-issue. Not sure if we will bother going back to The Sylvee if this is the level of effort they put into things.

    TOTALLY ENGAGING!

by Rene' on 2/16/20Old National Centre - Indianapolis

You couldn't ask for a better pairing of musicians and songwriters! It was a privilege to see Iron and Wine, but coupled with Calexico put it over the top!! Great to have seating instead of general admission -- much more comfortable. Dearly hope I'll get a chance to see either or both of these extremely talented (funny and nice) performers again.

    Iron and Wine/Calexico

by O. R. on 2/16/20Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

The venue was great. Hoyt Sherman has great acoustics and although we were up in the balcony we could hear everything so clearly. The opening act was excellent, although we thought it went a little too long. We wanted more of Iron and Wine and less of the opening act. And in fact, that is our one and only gripe about the event. We drove three hours because we were hoping to hear the songs Flightless Bird and The Trapeze Swinger by Iron and Wine and they never materialized. So maybe a shorter opening act may have allowed for those songs to be on their playlist for the night. Other than that, the show was still great and we met Calexico’s drummer John Convertino who came out to the front of the stage, shook hands and said thank you for coming out in this weather to see us. Very nice and gracious individual. Would have been nice to see Sam do the same thing. Great experience overall.

    Poor sound

by Duck on 2/16/20Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

My wife and I could not hear the lyrics. And why not start sooner. Warmup lasted 45 minutes and main act didn’t start till 9:10. This was a weeknight with work in the morning.

Should have been billed 'Calexico w/ special guest Sam Beam'

by sarah on 2/14/20Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Best thing about this show was the opening act of Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn. We were very disappointed that only two Iron and Wine songs were played during the entire show, otherwise it was all of Calexico's work. I think Calexico is fine, which is why I gave this review two stars, but if you are going to bill it as both bands, then play both. The Ryman is such a great venue and it makes me sad that it was such a disappointing experience.

Loved Iron and With with Calexico. The Ryman was the best place to enjoy great music with a very respectful audience.

    Disappointed

    by J. P. on 2/14/20Ryman Auditorium - Nashville

Love the band. The sound was terrible. Some instruments were too loud and the lead guitar was barely audible.
