Les Misérables on Tour

Theater producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh created his — dare we say it? — revolutionary new production of Les Misérables to commemorate the 25th anniversary of composer Claude-Michel Schönberg and lyricist Alain Boublil's musical, a rousing sung-through story of the Paris underclass' failed 1832 rebellion. After being seen around the world, Mackintosh's brisk new version opened in 2019 in the lavishly refurbished Sondheim Theatre (formerly Queen's Theatre) in London, thereby extending Les Mis' record as the West End's longest-running musical.

Mackintosh notably replaced the original production's famous revolving stage with a stream of projections derived from original drawings by Victor Hugo, upon whose 1862 novel Les Misérables is based. The current production stars Jon Robyns as Valjean, the tortured petty criminal whose pursuit by the steely and serpentine Javert (Bradley Jaden) drives the show. As the tragic Fantine, Carrie Hope Fletcher sings the show-stopping ballad "I Dreamed a Dream," and Shan Ako plays the equally ill-fated Eponine, who delivers the heartbreaking "On My Own." Surging ensemble numbers have been leaving audiences tingling.

About Les Misérables

The idea for a musical based on Victor Hugo's novel came to Alain Boublil during a performance of Oliver!, another show famously set among the proletariat. The concept album he recorded with composer Schönberg led to its first French stage version in 1980. Cameron Mackintosh's first English-language production opened in London in 1985, and Les Mis migrated to Broadway two years later. It has since been seen by more than 120 million people in 52 countries and 22 languages.

Set in the gritty streets of Paris during an explosive period of French history, Les Misérables conveys the poverty, danger and degradation of lower-class existence through magnificent songs such as "I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home," "One Day More" and "Master of the House." And the new production, according to The Guardian's Miriam Gillinson, could not be more contemporary, arriving as it does "at a time when all of us — in our own way — are hoping for a brighter tomorrow."

I was nervous about seeing this newer production after having seen larger productions on bigger stages (turn-table, etc). But even on a smaller stage and a smaller cast, the production was great. Awesome scenics and staging, incredible talent, and an unmatched score! My two critiques would be: (1) wish that some of the songs weren't shortened (Castle on a Cloud; Gavroche's final song "Little people") and (2) didn't care for the casting of Eponine. She had a beautiful voice but didn't capture the essence of the character (for me anyway!) That said, awesome show!

The show was amazing! My tears flowed, not only because of the beautiful story, but because of the phenomenal talent! I would see it again in a heartbeat!

    Les Mis was very good

by diggerodelle on 1/21/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

This is the third time we have seen Les Mis. Once in Winnipeg, Manitoba with the Canadian Cast; once in Fort Myers several years ago, and again now. I must say the Canadian cast was much better than the other two. The sound at Bob Carr was not great, and it seemed that the cast were yelling way too much. All in all, one can't beat this music. Was a very entertaining night. Loved the new staging, and props.

We have both seen Les Miserables several times and this was the best version by far. The voices blended well together and the sets were outstanding, especially the sewer scene. We wish we had tickets for the following night as well.

    Superior!!!!!!

by kgolab on 1/21/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

This was the best musical I have ever seen. The cast was top notch and had voices that were A++++++. Even though the show is long it moves really fast and you never get bored as with some other musicals. Since they sing the entire dialoque that is important to me.

    Most Excellent Les Mis!

by SidnLee on 1/21/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

The play was so well done, we cried in parts! Partly because of the content, and partly because it was so beautifully performed. The stage changes were magical. We have seen this play many times...this was the best!!

Les Miserable never looses it's power.

by gmamaj on 1/21/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

The performance was truly memorable. The cast was spirited and committed to performing a top-notch show. Valjean was among the best I have ever seen. His portrayal was heart-felt and very moving. The other stand-out was Garoche.. Lighting, costuming and set design were excellent and the turntable was not missed at all. My only criticism would be the occasional chorus garbling of words when they seem to be so excited that the articulation was lost. BRAVO!! Thank you for an excellent evening.

The New Les Mis Exceeded all expecations!!!

by robbalvey on 1/21/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

I've seen Les Mis about 30-something times. This new production was the best I've ever seen! The cast was very SOLID, and the new set design, lighting, and use of theater effects blew me away. I always felt that the first act of Les Mes was very "minimalist", which I didn't mind because I *love* the story, but the new design of the show keeps the amazing story, fantastic music, and ads amazing new sets for those who need eye candy to please them. I could not recommend this tour more! The only bad thing is that Bob Carr Theater is a dump. Looking like it hasn't been updated since 1976. But the production and performances - TOP NOTCH!

    Les Mis was Wonderful!!

by Farrhome on 1/21/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

The production was absolutely wonderful! The only complaint is that intermission was not long enough for all to use restrooms. Stood in line at beginning of intermission and was late coming in for 2nd half. Very embarrassing!!

Les Miserables 25th - very enjoyable

by GrendelBlitz on 1/20/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

Even on the smaller stages, this performance was very enjoyable. J. Mark McVey who portrayed Jean Valjean was spectacular - I have seen Colm Wilkinson from past Broadway shows and McVey did a bang-up job. Highly recommended and the fact that the stage was not so large (Bob Carr Theater) was dealt well with nice props and set design tricks such as a great video projected backdrop of certain story elements - the sewers are very well done.

by MrsCongeniality on 1/20/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

Wow--wow--WOW!!! The performances were outstanding, ALL of them, even the extras were extraordinary!! I was also very impressed with the sets, extremely well done! This is truly the BEST I have seen out of ALL the theatre productions I have attended and I have been to a LOT (Cats, Rent, Wicked, Grease, just to name a few). Wish I could go see it again but I couldn't get more tickets!

    Les Miserables

by Anonymous on 1/20/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

We had seen this show three times on Broadway, and thought we'd see what the road show was like and were pleasantly surprised and quite pleased with the performance. . I have recommended this show to all my friends and neighbors and wouldn't mind going again.

    Disappointed

by Jacahu on 1/20/12Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

I have seen Les Miserables several times and it is by far my favorite Broadway show. However, this performance was disappointing. The lighting and set were very dark. Some of the time it was hard to see the background effects even though we had good seats. The Valjean actor although I'm sure talented was the weakest I've seen. He did not seem to act much and would just stand and sing. Some of the background player's choreography was lewd and unnecessary(acting out having sex several times). I did not like the changes to the set. It was not as detailed as before and seemed crowded and dark. I still enjoyed the story but would not recommend this particular version/performance to someone who had not seen it before because it can be done so much better.
