About

GUIDED BY VOICES IN CONCERT:

For more than two decades, DIY torchbearers Guided by Voices have stood as a bastion of experimentation and lo-fi grit in indie rock's increasingly commercialized landscape. Their loose, sketch-like compositions truly come alive at their frenetic live shows, where the band tears through 90-second songs while frontman Robert Pollard sings, drinks, and karate kicks with reckless abandon. With two albums out in 2014, the ever-prolific band will be treating fans to new material alongside all their favorites at several  rare appearances.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed in Ohio in the early '80s, Guided by Voices developed around the work of principal songwriter and frontman Robert Pollard. Following several years of independent releases and local shows, the band began to find a wider audience when 1992 album Propeller became a college radio staple. Their growing reputation landed them a deal with Matador in 1994, and in 1995 they released Alien Lanes to critical acclaim and nods from big media outlets including MTV and Rolling Stone. The band continued to record and tour throughout the '90s and '00s, weathering lineup changes, hiatuses, farewell tours, and reunion tours — becoming a veritable indie rock legend in the process. With two new albums hitting shelves in 2014, the band is sure to be in top form at their highly coveted reunion shows.

FANS WHO BOUGHT TICKETS SAY:

"It was such a great, high-energy show. It was so fun to see people of all ages appreciate GBV for the great rock pioneers they are."

"GBV always give their fans their money's worth. Exhausting set of hits and album tracks that deserve to be hits."

"The most amazing show i have ever seen, everyone was singing all the words to every song, and the band were performing with unbelievable energy."

If You've Never Seen GBV In Concert, You've Never Heard Rock

by TomHughesUD on 4/4/22Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Bob Pollard and his band of Dayton, Ohio (if not in actuality, at least in wild spirit) musical hooligans storm across this country (and the world) like a massive Rock and Roll Weather Front. But they leave behind no destruction (except perhaps to the most virginal eardrums), just a sense of unquenchable joy that can't be satisfied again until they roll into your hometown (or anywhere within 500 miles), you pray to the RNR gods to get a ticket, and you're once again in the thick of it, in the presence of one of the greatest bands in history. God Save the Queen, Jane of the Waking Universe. God Save Pete Townshend. And God Watch Over Bob Pollard. He's safe in the bosom of the Great Musical Mystery.

Another on off the Bucket List

    by Eric on 10/11/21Tellus 360 - Lancaster

I’ve been a huge fan since I bought Bee Thousand on cassette when it was issued, because I liked the artwork. But I have never seen them live. This lineup, with Doug, Bobby, Mark and Kevin is truly exceptional. The band was loud and tight, and the venue’s sound system was fantastic. Almost 3 hours, many of the hits interspersed with lots of fantastic new material. Go. See. This!

GBV's 100 Songs Were Delivered With 100% Ferocity!

by Curtis Fry on 1/7/20Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Spanning FOUR HOURS and FIFTEEN MINUTES, Guided By Voices delivered an epic show for the ages; 100 songs from over 12 albums, the band was ON FIRE from start to finish! This was clearly the best GBV performance I have witnessed over the past 20 years as frontman Bob Pollard was vocally at the peak of his game. Sure, he had a few beers during the show along with a couple of liquor swigs but belted out each song like it his last. Guitarist Doug Gillard sizzled especially when pushed into solo action while Bobby Bare, Jr. attacked his instrument as a man possessed. Mark Shue laid down some serious bass licks providing a perfect foundation while Kevin March pounded the skins with amazing aplomb. At 62 years old, Bob is slowing down a bit evidenced by taking a few sitting breaks in betweens tunes (he reports striking hip pain) BUT his voice is more robust than ever! I don't know if GBV will ever play 100 songs in one setting again so I was VERY glad to be in attendance and behold this historic event. SPECTACULAR!

Best damned New Year’s Eve ever

by Jon on 1/3/20Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

Bob and the band were on fire ! It was a godly feat to have witnessed. The teragram is a fab venue, great access to the bar, bathroom, not a band vantage point in the house. Thanks Uncle Bob for bringing the the new decade in spectacular fashion !

    Top show of all-time!

by Juice on 1/3/20Teragram Ballroom - Los Angeles

It can never be overstated enough just how incredible and vast Bob’s song catalog is. This particular incarnation of the GBV band is so tight and full of energy. Really though, is there anybody better? Now? Or, even ever? Pollard is an absolutely insane talent. They are the ideal blend of heavy guitars and poppy hooks. I’m so grateful to live in an era to have experienced GBV 6 times and this performance was as close to perfection as it gets. Sure, there are songs that were not played but the set list was jammed packed with classic favorites etched into the physique of die hards as well as tasty new cuts from current releases. This show was worth every penny. The venue, especially the sound, was also perfect. The vocals and every chord were crystal clear, it was impressive. GBV!

by Jazzercizist on 5/15/18The Underground - Charlotte

I really appreciate that they got Guided By Voices to play here. The venue was perfect for the audience to share the enthusiasm with the band, and vice versa. Great service from the barstaff. I had an excellent time!

Great band, but lead singer was drunk.

by Goestoshows on 8/26/14The Stone Pony - Asbury Park

Singer had a bottle of tequila in hand throughout entire set. Was almost empty by end of show. Too much drunken ranting & banter in between songs. Great set nonetheless.

Guided By Voices at The Paramount - Stunk !

by earningsbull on 8/25/14The Paramount - Huntington

Lead singer seemed to be drunk from the start and was seemed more interested in drinking from his bottle. Maybe if you have to be that drunk to play it means it's time to give it up. He kept on slurring his words and I couldn't understand a thing. The seat was a bit uncomfortable and the sound was kind of tinny. Same problem at The Space. Maybe some sound panels from the ceiling could help.

GBV was as good/better than ever. Sound, set, energy were all great. Paradise, however, is a challenge when you are vertically challenged and it's a sold out show. Took a long time to finally find a tiny opening to see through from the balcony.
