About

Phish in Concert

Probably no other band around today is more about the live experience than Phish. As the undisputed kings of the jam-band movement that began in the '80s and exploded in the '90s with bands like Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, and The Spin Doctors, they defined a style that was song-based but also about improvisation and the magic of the moment. When they brought their creative collision of rock, jazz, funk, folk, and country influences to a quickly expanding grassroots fan base in the '80s, a movement was born -- one in which the music was constantly developing before the audience's eyes and ears. Trey Anastasio's guitar, Page McConnell's keyboards, Mike Gordon's bass, and Jon Fishman's drums engage in a four-part conversation that's constantly evolving. Whether the band is playing tunes off classic Phish releases like 'Billy Breathes' and 'The Story of the Ghost,' or performing one of their famous Halloween shows where they cover another artist's album in its entirety, like The Who's 'Quadrophenia' or Talking Heads' 'Remain in Light,' Phish is always in flux. While headlining festivals like Bonnaroo, or hosting their own, like The Clifford Ball and Magnaball, or keeping an event all to themselves, the band maintains an unbreakable connection with their huge, hardcore audience of Phish Heads.

Phish Background

Phish got its start at The University of Vermont in 1983, when guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bass man Mike Gordon, and drummer Jon Fishman started jamming informally. But by the mid '80s, when Holdsworth had departed and keyboardist Page McConnell arrived to solidify the band's lineup, the band was truly beginning to define its sound -- a mix of Grateful Dead-inspired psychedelic jamming, jazzy fluidity, and funk-savvy grooves. Phish released its first, self-titled album in 1986, but like the Dead, they were always more about the live experience than the recording studio. And by the end of the '80s they were hitting the road hard, building up a hefty, dedicated audience and pretty much creating the jam-band circuit in the process. Their songwriting shone on albums like 'A Picture of Nectar,' 'Billy Breathes,' and 'The Story of a Ghost,' while their concerts became a nexus for thousands of hardy Phish Heads. You can't keep Phish out of water for long, and these days they continue to take their idiosyncratic but infectious sound to the people, creating new generations of Phish fans along the way.

    Great page try spotty sound

by Lawrence on 4/21/24Sphere - Las Vegas

Entrance: could have been better informed on how to get inside the ball. Had to line up a Vegas block inside one alley if you were 100 level. Walking into the seats was aww inspiring. Merch: lots of options, fantastic job. Lots to brag about when it comes to staffing and availability of products. Lighting: fantastic 1,000 times better than the best. Complaint: level 100’s were blocked from the top half of the screen between rows 22-36ish. From those spots still great. Seats: super comfortable, plenty of room to dance during the show. Sound: not like a normal concert with amps on the stage. Sounded like a studio recording at times in an intimate way. Big problem: the guitar stopped coming through the speakers every other song (noticed during the second set.) A rock concert with just keyboard and base is more like loud easy listening. Just when you thought it was fixed it would go out again. Reminded me of forest gump speaking at the rally and no one could hear him but you could see him speaking. Hugely dissatisfied to go to a concert and have this happen. It’s like going to Starbucks and getting a cold cup of coffee or going to a steakhouse and not being able to taste. Going to a rock concert seeing the guitarist play but not hearing it…

    Obstructed

by Roulette on 4/21/24Sphere - Las Vegas

The obstructed seats should be ripped out and burned. That is the biggest dissatisfaction and overpriced ticket to any event ever!!! The designers of the sphere should be ashamed of themselves and Ticketmaster should be penalized for selling these worthless tickets at such high prices. Shame on you!

    Blown away every time

by JJ PDorfer on 1/9/24Madison Square Garden - New York

No bad takes the risks or sees the rewards that Phish does. Having seen them 50+ times, I still get excited ahead of each show wondering what they’ll play and where they’ll take those songs. The Force is strong with these boys even 40 years into their time together. Buy a ticket. Read the Book. Surrender to the Flow.

    Once in a lifetime

by Fluffhead11 on 1/8/24Madison Square Garden - New York

This was a phenomenal, once in a lifetime experience where Phish played Gamehendge for the first time since 1994! Phish has this series of songs that are a story that Trey Anastasio wrote in 1983, and it’s kind of like the phish bible called gamehendge. They haven’t played it through in a concert in 30 years and they played it for their 40th anniversary on NYE at their 83rd show playing at Madison Square Garden. It’s a dream come true to hear it…and not only did they play it but they had actors and a whole Broadway production of the story happening all over MSG. On top of that I was in a box with amazing seats and a bunch of my close friends and my brother was sitting in the box right next to mine. This was one of the best nights of my life. The arena was primed and ready to accept this unbelievable gift!

    Msg New Years Eve 2023.

by Gator on 1/6/24Madison Square Garden - New York

The show was the most epic performance from a band in the 21st century. I cannot forget to mention all the extra people that contributed to the overall experience. It obviously took a lot of rehearsing to accomplish what they did. MSG is THE venue. The staff is always courteous and helpful. It was my best NYE of my life!!!

    Phish: greatest band ever!

by Matt popovich on 1/4/24Madison Square Garden - New York

I've seen phish 90ish times since I was 15 in 2000. Never a disappointment. Phish has been crushing it on their own terms for 4 decades and I don't see that changing in the near future.

I know music is a subjective art form, but Phish is objectively the best band and light show in the business.

    Phish 12/31/23

by MLD on 1/3/24Madison Square Garden - New York

I saw Phish at Madison Square Garden on 12/31/23 exactly 30 years to the day of the first time I saw them. They staged an epic performance of the Gamehendge saga during their 3 set New Year’s Eve extravaganza. Gamehendge is a rock opera which hadn’t been performed live since July of 1994 so this was a special night for Phish and their fans! I’ve seen 82 Phish shows at Madison Square Garden and the energy in the room on 12/31/23 hit a peak that I have never experienced before! Looking forward to seeing Phish again this summer. And again and again and again as the years go on.
