Phish in Concert
Probably no other band around today is more about the live experience than Phish. As the undisputed kings of the jam-band movement that began in the '80s and exploded in the '90s with bands like Widespread Panic, Blues Traveler, and The Spin Doctors, they defined a style that was song-based but also about improvisation and the magic of the moment. When they brought their creative collision of rock, jazz, funk, folk, and country influences to a quickly expanding grassroots fan base in the '80s, a movement was born -- one in which the music was constantly developing before the audience's eyes and ears. Trey Anastasio's guitar, Page McConnell's keyboards, Mike Gordon's bass, and Jon Fishman's drums engage in a four-part conversation that's constantly evolving. Whether the band is playing tunes off classic Phish releases like 'Billy Breathes' and 'The Story of the Ghost,' or performing one of their famous Halloween shows where they cover another artist's album in its entirety, like The Who's 'Quadrophenia' or Talking Heads' 'Remain in Light,' Phish is always in flux. While headlining festivals like Bonnaroo, or hosting their own, like The Clifford Ball and Magnaball, or keeping an event all to themselves, the band maintains an unbreakable connection with their huge, hardcore audience of Phish Heads.
Phish Background
Phish got its start at The University of Vermont in 1983, when guitarists Trey Anastasio and Jeff Holdsworth, bass man Mike Gordon, and drummer Jon Fishman started jamming informally. But by the mid '80s, when Holdsworth had departed and keyboardist Page McConnell arrived to solidify the band's lineup, the band was truly beginning to define its sound -- a mix of Grateful Dead-inspired psychedelic jamming, jazzy fluidity, and funk-savvy grooves. Phish released its first, self-titled album in 1986, but like the Dead, they were always more about the live experience than the recording studio. And by the end of the '80s they were hitting the road hard, building up a hefty, dedicated audience and pretty much creating the jam-band circuit in the process. Their songwriting shone on albums like 'A Picture of Nectar,' 'Billy Breathes,' and 'The Story of a Ghost,' while their concerts became a nexus for thousands of hardy Phish Heads. You can't keep Phish out of water for long, and these days they continue to take their idiosyncratic but infectious sound to the people, creating new generations of Phish fans along the way.
The sphere was an OK start. But a band of this caliber needs to do a lot better
Best band in the land and it's not even close. Thank you Phish!
Title says it all. Top tier experience. Will be back!
Unreal experience, Sphere is one of a kind and venue is really suited for Phish
All Phish concerts are an immersive sensory experience, but seeing the band at the Sphere takes the band's legendary live show to an entirely new level. As it was the first night, it felt like the band was taking the venue for a test drive during the first set. The music was great and the incredible Sphere surround sound significantly enhanced the band's playing. However, the use of the visual capabilities of the Sphere's screen felt a tiny bit underwhelming. The second set (as well as subsequent shows that I streamed from home) was a completely different story. The band kicked it up a notch both musically and in their use of the immersive tech of the venue. I was filled with nothing but immense satisfaction when the (incredibly long - in a good way) second set and encore finally ended.
If you can imagine taking someone from the 1970s/80s to a modern sports stadium and see the look in their eyes, that is what Shpere is ike. It's like stepping in to the future, where theaters have taken a giant leap forward. Phish was on fire, but the real start was the Sphere itself. I'm not sure I can see a show at a regular venue again.
venue was really cool, music was fantastic.... but somehow i ended up in seats where i could only see a small portion of the primary draw to the venue. how can they justify selling these tickets at the same price as the others?
I'll always love seeing Phish in any venue, but this was a truly unique and game changing experience at the Sphere in Vegas: it's almost as if you are inside the music. The sound was incredible, the visual experience immersive, and the energy of the band all came together to create a truly once in a lifetime show (or hopefully the first of many once in a lifetime shows!).
This band delivered a truly amazing experience each night at the sphere. I consider myself very lucky to be in attendance. Super nice sphere staff, uniquely cool ambiance throughout the venue- they even had N/A BEER!! 11/10
Didn't really know what to expect, but that was exceptional! Above and beyond! I feel honored to have been a part of this experience.
Expectations were met and some, highly reccomend! If your favorite band is playing there, go see them! The visuals are perfect and sound was immaculate
Totally unique concert experience. Both the sound and visual aspects exceeded expectations. And of course the band is just legendary.
This is an entirely new entertainment experience -- phenomenal! Impeccable 360 sound, 16k visuals unlike anything I've ever seen before -- all while the greatest band of all time is playing at peak performance. I've seen Phish 150+ times and probably thousands of concerts in my life, and nothing even remotely compares to seeing Phish at Sphere!
Phish on Friday night at the Sphere was the single greatest musical experience of my life. The Sphere is now a musical Mecca. Everyone must experience at least once.
Phish at Sphere in Vegas was an absolute dream. This is a band at the peak of their skill, but visually and aurally. Don't miss a Phish show, especially one with a gimmick attached like Sphere.
great band perfect sound unreal visuals - one of the best music exp of my lifetime
Fantastic use of visual graphics to enhance the music. The acoustics were the best quality I have ever heard at a concert. Phish was fantastic as usual. The Sphere needs to work on their system of getting into the facility. I have never been in such a crowded unsafe environment getting into any other facility Really bad design. Can’t believe the fire marshall allows it.
You cannot experience this place by videos from your couch. Another great production by Trey and family.
In every way, Phish at the Sphere exceeded expectation. It was incredible and I’m so grateful that I was inside for 2 of these shows. 11/10
Not a devotee of Phish honestly-I find their music is wandering off on long, not-melodic tangents and too long weird spacey “improvisations”. The graphics, initially very cool, became quite repetitive (esp the car sequence and the mathematical shapes). The sphere is an amazing venue and I can’t wait to come back. Need to improve security screening to get in. It was an avoidable bottleneck at the entry.
