Gary was in excellent voice and his banter w/ the crowd & the band between songs was very amusing. The band was tight and did not miss a beat all night. Geoff Whitehorn was stellar, playing his new PRS guitar. Matt Pegg (bass) & Josh Phillips (Hammond B3) hit all the right notes & Geoff Dunn on drums is not BJ Wilson (no one is!), but he hit all the fills and accents and rounded out the sound beautifully. The show consisted of two hour long sets, with a brief intermission, and covered selections from WSOP, Shine on Brightly, A Salty Dog, Home, Grand Hotel, Exotic Birds & Fruits and others, as well as some humorous improvs. "Conquistador" was a rousing encore.
The Birchmere is an historic, intimate venue and the seating & sight lines, as well as the sound mix was near perfect.
It is a crying shame that Procol Harum does not seem to be on the radar for inclusion into the R&R HOF, but their omission is a glaring oversight. Their induction might be the only chance that Gary Brooker, Robin Trower, Matthew Fisher & Chris Copping will ever appear on the same stage together again. Procoholics can always hope.
