What a great evening. Everything was well done and magical. Loved every minute. Can't wait to go again.
The quality of the show was not worth the price of the tickets. It reminded me of a junior theater production instead of a professional . I expected a higher quality of talent and production and was disappointed.
Female lead was strong; sets, lighting and music very nice; dancing good. Male lead vocals left a good deal to be desired
The main character, Tony, lacked the star quality I was hoping for. His voice and charisma did not match the rest of the cast.
Some what weak in some areas. Not near as strong as past renditions we have seen. F.
We are Musical-junkies -- we enjoy musicals while on trips and have had season tickets to Broadway San Diego for years (at the Civic). We were so deeply dissatisfied with this production that we have told everyone to stay away. We are simply stupefied by the casting choices, which were abominable-- why choose a Maria who can sing -- but with a LOUD, operatic voice -- yet has little emotion or acting depth? Her countenance rarely shifted and as a result, she never seemed like she was really Maria -- there appeared to be little to no chemistry between her and Tony. And Tony -- it was almost insulting, assigning a role THAT iconic to a man whose voice was simply not up to the task and was, in fact, irritating. His upper register was easier to listen to, but his vibrato was loose and almost sounded, sad to say, like braying. During certain portions of the 1st part of the play, the family in front of us started laughing, shoulders shaking, trying to keep quiet, but they could not stop. I wondered if they were annoyed by the same things bothering us -- my musings were answered by the fact that they did not return after intermission. We considered it, too, but we paid A LOT for those tickets, and we truly enjoyed the choreography. The dancing was at least 3 stars, but since we had to listen to some of our most favorite songs of all time being entirely butchered by actors who should never have been chosen for those particular roles, we have to give it 1 star. There were other moments where the ladies (in some of the bedroom scenes) were horribly off tune and somehow off tempo, as well. The actor who played Anita, was close to perfect -- she could sing AND dance AND act. Why cast someone so competent for Anita, yet let us down with a Maria and Tony that fell far outside of what is acceptable for such important roles AND such expensive seats? We will stick with Civic from now on -- this was just an embarrassing mistake. Never again.
This is my favorite musical of all time. I am impressed with all aspects of the performance. I brought my granddaughter who is taking dance classes. I was so glad the choreography was true to the original shows and movie. The leads and the Troupe all put their heart and soul into it. The orchestra was also phenomenal! Bernstein ' s score is amazing and they did it perfectly. I am sorry that the theater setting prevented us from seeing them too. 5 stars!
Absolutely wonderful! Great voices. Tony's was exceptional. Loved the interaction and believability of all the cast members interacting with each other.
I took my 12 year old daughter to see the matinee show. Spreckles is a great place to see a show, small intimate and historical . The performance was well done. Set design was minimal but set the scenes perfectly. The orchestra sounded great, but was completely hidden behind a screen would have rather like to see them in a pit. I typically like to watch the conductor. My only wish was for Tony to have had a bigger voice. His songs were always a little flat. Almost over powered by Maria at times.
Located in the downtown area of SD, this theatre is built nicely. The immediate area around it has some angry homeless folks but that is just life. Within the theatre, the aisles are very cramped...more than any other theatre I've been to. The sound quality was fairly well produced and the orchestra was spot on. Some characters spoke rather quickly. Almost as if they were shy and speaking hastily from sheer nervousness. This was not my first WSS. Choreography was decent. Overall a very nice time with my wife. I do have to admit that something felt a bit amateurish about the performance. I felt I paid too much for what I saw. Three stars.
