Washington Wizards History

Founded in 1961, the Washington Wizards franchise has called Chicago, Baltimore, Landover, Maryland. and Washington, D.C. home. Known earlier as the Packers, Zephyrs and Bullets, the franchise changed its name to the Wizards in 1997.

After earning two playoff appearances in their first five seasons in Baltimore, the team started a formidable run of postseason success starting in the 1968–69 season. Led by Hall of Famers Earl Monroe and Wes Unseld (and later Elvin Hayes), the Bullets went to the playoffs 12 seasons in a row, including four trips to the Finals and a championship in 1978. Behind an MVP performance from Unseld, Washington defeated Seattle in a decisive Game 7 to clinch the title.

Five consecutive postseason appearances highlighted the Bullets’ 80s. The franchise bounced back in the early 2000s, built around the core of Gilbert Arenas, Antawn Jamison and Caron Butler. That trio led Washington to four straight playoff appearances from 2005–2008. Since then, the Wizards have qualified for the postseason five times behind All-Stars John Wall and Bradley Beal, the latter of which became one of six players in NBA history to average 30-plus points per game in back-to-back seasons.

Great Game! Poorly Communicated Bag Policy

by Susan on 4/7/23Capital One Arena - Washington

It was an exciting game! We totally enjoyed it! We checked the NBA bag policy. It states 14x14x6” limit. When we got to the area, it is actually 5x7”!!! Many people were caught off guard and had to download an app, create an account, and then pay the locker. By the time we got this resolved, we missed part of Quarter 1!!!

Work on the spacing of the seats and food

by Missy on 4/4/23Capital One Arena - Washington

I understand the desirer to fill the arena to pay for all the required personnel, upkeep, light bill, water bill, vendors, etc., but the spacing of the seats could have been more practical for even an average size person. As a woman of 5'4" I had to spread my legs to be comfortable. Plus, the food & drinks could be more reasonably priced. Once again, I understand all the overhead it takes to run such a large establishment. It just the oil that the chicken tenders are fried in smelled old, which made the food taste terrible and not enjoyable to eat, which resulted in a waste of money. If you are going to charge such high prices for the food make sure the food is of good quality. One can of beer was fifteen dollars or more. People will spend more for less, which would still help cover the overall cost of a product. I love seeing my Washington Wizards play (win or lose) and now I know to look for better seats and eat/drink before the game.

First NBA Game wasn't all that

by G on 4/3/23Capital One Arena - Washington

There wasn't much detail provided or highlighted around the does or the don'ts to help tourists wanting to experience their first NBA match. I had issues at the gate with my back pack. Issues at the stalls with my ID (they didnt accept my national ID or drivers license).

    Big Headache

    by T. K. on 4/2/23Capital One Arena - Washington

This was the WORST pro sporting event I have ever attended in my ENTIRE LIFETIME. The music and other soundtrack were BLARING AT US CONSTANTLY from the minute we arrived, non-stop, at 90 to 100 decibels. I grew up going to basketball games at the Boston Garden. You were there to watch basketball, not listen to loud rap music. And Fenway Park is the same. When the batter steps into the box, the music stops, and you can focus on the game. I am shocked that the NBA allows this, especially with all the music (so-called) during play action. This was NOT an ENJOYABLE experience. You - the NBA, Wizards management, arena ownership - RUINED the experience for me of watching a ballgame. Everyone in my family had a GIANT HEADACHE by the start of the second quarter - and we arrived to the game 10 minutes late! (So you do the math.) I will NEVER again attend another Wizards game. Many dollars down the drain on Tuesday night.

    Wizards game was awesome

by EvanL on 3/27/23Capital One Arena - Washington

Wizards games are always a fun time. Entry is smooth and staff are pleasent. Not a bad seat in the house. Drinks and food are expensive but where arent they. Watching NBA players ball is worth every penny, the talent is unbeleivable. Highly reccomend checking out a game for yourself

    Southern Hospitality

by Shandalynn on 3/17/23Capital One Arena - Washington

All of your staff were so helpful and accommodating. We are from Louisiana and super friendly. We weren’t met with rude looks and the hospitality was met with even better hospitality. We enjoyed the game and we were on the Jumbotron which made my kids first NBA experience that much better the price of the food was price gaugey 92 dollars was a bit much when you could go to Guys restaurant and eat well with that. But other than that I enjoyed.

by Ryan L. on 3/12/23Capital One Arena - Washington

The Wizards/Raptors game was great. Our seats were awesome and the food and drinks were amazing. Wish they still had the bottles of wine you could buy that came with the collectible wizards canter. All staff were super friendly and helpful.

    Too much

by Pops on 3/8/23Capital One Arena - Washington

Too many other things going on at once...music blasting was annoying. Hard to hear the battles under the basket. Too many 3+ minute timeouts. At least the Bucks won!

Amazing Adventure with Wizards and Bucks

by SeanYoungStrong on 3/8/23Capital One Arena - Washington

We were given a meet and greet with multiple players from both teams. These young men are so much more than just basketball players. They took time to do selfies and sign autographs. This has forever changed the lives of the boys. For pictures and videos of the players check out my son’s blog on Facebook. SeanYoungStrong
