Thodos Dance Chicago Tickets

White City was absolutely incredible. The second half of the show was also very entertaining. Excellent dancers. Kudos to the company and Melissa Thodos.

The Thodos Dance Company Performance was both exhilarating and unique in regards to the choreography as well as all of the talented and very athletic dance professionals. And, given the very fascinating "story line" of the White City performance and all of the dances in Act II, the audience experience overall was truly memorable.

We saw the Auditorium on Saturday night (11/29). The White City piece was a wonderful work of artistic creativity, taking a work from history and telling its story through movement was just breathtaking. The pieces in the second half were all excellent, and showed a great variety and versatility of the dancers.

Thodos Dance Chicago's kick-off of the Auditorium Theater's dance season was spectacular! The company's performance last Saturday night signifies an important milestone in its 23 year history, to be honored as the dance season opener during the 125th Anniversary Celebration of the Auditorium Theater. The technical and artistic level of the company has risen tremendously since the premier of "The White City" in 2011. The dark and sardonic vocabulary of the work, a collaboration between Ann Reinking and Melissa Thodos, juxtaposed the glittering surface appearance of the magnificent World's Fair against events that occurred behind the scenes during the ill-fated Columbian Exposition. The second half of the performance showcased Thodos Dance's broad and athletic contemporary dance competence. Of particular note were the three performances from the mid 20th Century choreographer Sybil Shearer. The Company captured the magic of her modern esthetic with elan. "Lullaby," from rising choreographer Brian Enos, served as a perfect ending to this beautiful dance program. This Company is clearly established as among the crème-de-la-crème in Chicago's vibrant and competitive contemporary dance environment.

The choreography was unimaginative; the dancers were not synchronized when they were clearly trying to be synchronized; and modern dance does not work with a narrative storyline, especially when they try to pack a long period of history into 35 minutes. Also, didn't realize the White City theme was only for half of the evening. The TV ads made it seem like the White City theme would be carried through the whole performace. The scene in the dungeon was laughable. Everythong else was dull.
