    A very fun evening

by rainbowandi on 10/9/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

I still love "They're Playing Our Song". This production was very fun. Stephanie J. Block makes singing look so easy and her characterization of Sonia was spot on. Jason Alexander was OK, but not enough of a music nerd as Vernon should be. Sometimes he seemed to be going through the motions of Vernon, not being Vernon. My biggest complaint is the changes to the music. The "Leon" song was stupid and didn't add to the script. And to take out "I still believe in love" was a travesty. It summed up the feelings and spirit of Sonia. The replacement song "If you remember me" didn't work. It changed Sonia's focus from the internal strength of going on to the external worry of whether she meant as much to Vernon as he did to her. The set was very clever and the "girls" and "boys" were fun. Overall, it was a very fun evening that brought back great memories.

    Great Voices!

by WendySt on 10/9/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

Story line is slim; music and singing voices great. Good humor with the chorus. Jason Alexander has an easy, comfortable stage presence. He's a joy to see. Stephanie Block has both a fantastic voice and good acting ability. Her name should be a household word. Could be fun, but the audience members near our seats were a bit cold, and some left at intermission.

    Lightweight

by Lobe on 10/7/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

A silly show when it was first staged, and still as lightweight as can be. "Leon" is used and re-used and over-used as forced "dramatic tension," since there isn't any. Two people work together, decide to sleep with each other, and not much else happens. Title song sounds like it was written by a five-year-old, and is played at the end on toy pianos to emphasise that point. Still, Stephanie Block is magnificent and Jason Alexander is cute (though he truly can't sing in Block's league).

    AMAZING SHOW

by blueeyedblonde13 on 10/7/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

The casting was excellant. Jason Alexander and Stephanie Block gave a great performance. The play made you laugh and it made me cry. Stephanie has a great voice and really knows how to get her emotions acoss when she sings. She sings with such feelings. This is just the type of play I love to see. A romantic comedy.

    Hmm. Maybe go see it.

by Zeke2 on 10/5/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

The actors were all great but I don't think it's a good show so I have to give it a tepid reservation. Not one of Neil Simon's best efforts. However, there is a lot of fun so if you love musical theater, see it. Stephanie Block is amazing. Not sure why Reprise decided to dust this one off. More success with "A Funny Thing Happened..."

Excellent performances all around, very nice show. Excellent audio quality - live orchestra, volume etc. was very professional. Theater seats were very old and uncomfortable though - they need new seats at this theater.

    Stephanie J. Block is amazing!!

by Kjwoodsemh on 10/4/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

The play was better than I expected. Jason Alexander was funny and the music was enjoyable. Above all, Stephanie J. Block blew the audience away once again. I'm considering going to see it again before it ends.

    Stephanie Block is amazing!

by Roid on 10/4/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

Super tour de force for Stephanie Block. Jason Alexander was his predictable excellent self. A great night at the theater, almost ruined by UCLA Freud Playhouse over air conditioning the room - everyone was very uncomfortable and the staff didn't seem to know how to turn it down.

We saw this musical with Robert Klein and Luci Arnaz a long time ago and loved it. I actually enjoyed Jason and Stephanie just as much if not better. The entire cast was great and the post play discussion was an added bonus and we were thrilled to get such added value.

    Not a waste of time!

by ujust8 on 10/2/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

We had no idea that Jason Alexander had such a good singing voice. There was no cracking the night we were there. The female lead was awesome. The songs were great. And, to top it off, Marvin Hamlish was sitting in the row in front of us. I have a hard time getting my husband to go to these things but, he enjoyed it also.

Jason Alexander was, as always, AMAZING! I can't say that enough. He's the reason you should see this show. Re our seats: I thought I wouldn't like the seats because we were way off to the side, but this theater isn't that big so nearly every seat actually has good views. And the leg room is really wide! I love this theater.

    Jason is Hot!!!!!!!

by rufusina on 9/30/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

Fab show, loved it. First row center, opening night, what could be more wonderful, except the theatre was overwhelmingly hot and so stuffy, it was hard to sit thru the show. I wish I could come again when the air conditioning is properly adjusted. What a travesty!!!!!!!!

I saw this show in the early 80s and enjoyed this production so much more! There were new songs added and the singing and dancing was excellent! Stephanie Block was unbelievably great and Jason Alexander did a wonderful job as Vernon. The ensemble cast was superb! It was a very fun evening!

They’re Really Playing a Wonderful Song!

by BroadwayinLA on 9/30/10Ralph Freud Playhouse - Los Angeles

This show was absolutely delightful...pure Neil Simon humor with a wonderful toe-tapping score by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Carole Bayer Sager that you simply can’t help but sing on the way out! The set design rings fun from the minute you walk into the theatre. But, what really made this show so wonderful, were the performances! As Vernon, Jason Alexander’s comic timing is right on, and the laughs just kept on coming! Stephanie J. Block is truly charming in the role of Sonia. Adorable, quirky, and oh my gosh, what a voice! It was almost as if the simple score was beneath what her beautiful voice could really do. The two had wonderful chemistry together and the audience delighted in sharing in their fun! I want to see it again!
