Don't buy a gift; give an experience. This year, The Washington Ballet celebrates 15 years of its very-DC version of The Nutcracker, through December 28 at the historic Warner Theatre in downtown Washington DC.
Set to Tchaikovsky's magical score, this celebrated production set in 1882 early Georgetown has become the signature Nutcracker in our nation's capital. The curtain rises and the audience is transported back in time to a Georgetown mansion, where party guests include Frederick Douglass, John Paul Jones, Harriet Tubman, Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. The Washington Ballet's iconic version is equal parts history lesson, mischief and humor. With General Washington as the heroic Nutcracker and George III as the Rat King, the story comes to life with over 100 dancers, intricate, stunning set designs and original custom costumes. Audiences will be captivated by stunning duets by Anacostia Native Americans and a springtime on the banks of the Potomac. Waltzing cherry blossoms, dancing cardinals and dancing sugar plums plus other enchanting adaptations make this unique production at the majestic Warner Theatre a special treat that continues to captivate audiences of all ages.

The ballet itself was supurb, the attendees were not. The two women directly in front of my daughter and I almost ruined our experience. One of the women must have poured an entire bottle of perfume oil in her hair. The fumes were toxic and gave us both a headache. I couldn't breath through my nose and finally had to mouth breath. In addition, they were talking almost the entire performance. One woman was even scrolling social media on her phone. Are people these days all so uncouth and poorly mannered? Strong perfumes should be discouraged, as should talking and being on a cell phone! I have been going to the ballet my entire life and have never seen such unsophisticated behavior.
The Washington Ballet provides a wonderful production, talented dancers, beautiful scenery and costumes. I have been a long time fan of this company. However, it would bring it up quite a notch if there were a live orchestra!! The music is at least half of the production. Imagine how magical it would be with live musical accompaniment! Please consider adding this to the production.
The ballet was satisfactory. I think going a bit late in the run (i.e., close to Christmas) and the second performance of a day sets you up to see you up for some fatigued performers. Also, a few of the audience were either over-served or obnoxious (or both), and it took the ushers awhile to realize they were being a problem and escort them out (very unfortunate given the number of children attending).
This Nutcracker performance was Magnificent!! We enjoyed it very much. The Best so far from The Washington Ballet Company.
Really loved the show. My only complaint is that there were no live musicians. Ticket prices are comparable to the Kennedy Center and I just wish some of that could be spent on an orchestra. It pains me that canned music is becoming the norm in professional theaters, for both the audience and the now out-of-work musicians. But wonderful dancers, beautiful set, beautiful choreography.
Awesome performance and give you spirit of miracles in holiday 😁😁😁amazing
We did not appreciate the initial fund raising or the fuss about local radio station and its chosen choir. This took 15 minutes!
Such a pleasure to watch this show annually - a true DC treasure with phenomenal dancers and captivating scenes . Seeing dozens of talented student dancers enrich the program and complement the company dancers makes this a particularly beautiful experience.
Great show, and staff was excellent and very polite
