This show was incredible. I had to read it a couple of years ago for a class, and was moved when I read it, but I was in no way prepared for the way these actors brought these characters to life. Larry Bates as MLK was perfect. He had MLK’s oratorical nuances down to an art. I was shocked when I met him after the play, because I thought he would have been larger than life from the way he was on the stage. The young woman who played the role of Camae, Emerald Rose Sullivan, is amazingly beautiful and amazingly talented, and I just was blown away. I really was. I was shocked when I met her, too! The director, Roger Guenveur Smith, was amazing. The way he had the characters move, I don’t know all the technicalities, but I know he was good. Really, really good. Seeing this a few days before the 50th anniversary of his assassination was particularly moving for me. If there is ANY way that we could have this show run the weekend before the anniversary of his death every year, I would most certainly go. It was just really incredible. Also, a huge shoutout to Katori Hall! A talented girl from Memphis that made this all happen! Shoot, I’m just happy she gave us a glimpse into her mind with this one. It was phenomenal.
