For someone who prefers traditional classical music, this was still an enjoyable show, made better by the charm, friendliness and technical skill of the three Ahn sisters. The three Juilliard-trained musicians were clearly very comfortable with the demands of their contemporary music, its sudden changes of tempo and rhythm, and even using novel tools like a tennis ball to rub the bass strings of the piano. They played seamlessly together as perhaps only siblings could, and interspersed their numbers with comments about their music, their careers and even their children. My favorite piece -- "Swing Shift" by a Juilliard classmate -- was followed by other modern compositions, all interesting, but with little chance to hear what the violin and cello can do in a more traditional setting. The piano parts were a bit more satisfying, and I would have appreciated at least one straight Mozart or Bach or Hayden selection. But all in all, it was a fun and exciting experience and well worth the price of admission.
I am always surprised and happy to find that Lafayette gets top notch entertainment such as the Ahn Trio. These women were amazing musicians and adorable representatives of their craft. They charmed the audience within 5 minutes of beginning their show and smiled huge smiles with every thunderous round of applause. You could tell they enjoyed what they were doing and it translated to a very enjoyable performance.
Great performance. Simple, beautiful, technical, emotional. Worth the price of admission.
