    in Conversation with Stephen Sondheim

by totalmusic on 11/29/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Just to be in the room with Stephen Sondheim is an honor. Anyone who knows anything about theatre, and those of us who want to know more, know that his subjects and lyrics are beyond clever but speak to the very heart of human nature. It was great to see him so animated and I think this had something to do with his interviewer who shared his love and depth of knowledge of theater. Happy Birthday Stephen! Here's to many, many, more!

    Stephen sondheim is living legend

by Anonymous on 11/11/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

It was amazing to hear Stephen describe his early days in the song-writing business, as well as how he works creatively. He was funny and brilliant, just like imagined.

Sondheim is entirely amusing, erudite, and a great raconteur. His recall of long distant personal details, and his knowledge of the musical theater is undeniably staggering. The problem with the evening was the format. The moderator was dreadful. From the sound of his voice to his ability to ask a cogent question or engage in any sort of meaningful or revealing conversation, he just failed. I actually was surprised that Sondheim agreed to work with him. The moderator was clearly in awe of his subject, and it seemed to prevent him from doing the job. Sondheim had to garner a question from the moderator's ramblings, restate a question to himself, and then answer the question. For those familiar with his history, there wasn't a lot of surprising information revealed in the evening. This all said, Sondheim is extraordinary. The book is gorgeous, and reads exquisitely. I would have loved to see him hosted better.

    Brillance of Sondheim

by lillyjacky on 11/10/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Hearing the man speak was well worth it. I only wish there was a way to submit questions to be asked. I found some of the questions lacking. But overall I was thrilled to see Sondheim in person!

    Silverblatt and Sondheim

by musicfan1971 on 11/10/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Stephen Sondheim is witty and charming with his audience. Yet, I felt Michael Silverblatt fell short on his choice of questions.

    Genius in the house

by HoFlo on 11/10/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

At 80 years old, Sonheim was more lively, articulate and funny than most everyone half his age. Razor sharp wit, and recall, the man has not only contributed to his art form in innumerable ways, but the people he has met and collaborated with along the way is astounding.. What a life, what an amazing talent and what an honor to hear him in conversation live and in person -- truly the Einstein of Musical Theatre. An intellect but one who can ellict the full range of human emotion through his lyrics and music. Wow.

    Sondheim was wonderful. As always.

by tstemps on 11/10/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

As a Sondheim fan for over fifty years,I was delighted to hear the Master talk in person about how he works. In spite of all the interviews I have read with him over the years, there was still much that was new in his comments. I had no idea how much the Rodgers and Hammerstein show ALLEGRO was an influence on him. Or why he does not compose at the piano (he said the muscle memory in his hands tends to fall into the chords he has used a lot).

    Sondheim great--Interviewer awkward and eccentric!

by RonsBroadway on 11/10/10Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Sondheim was enjoyable. Intelligent, witty, and in great shape for his age. It was a pleasure spending 90 minutes with the greatest composer of our time. The interviewer was nervous, addle-brained, eccentric and annoying. He was an embarrassment that added an awkwardness to the evening. Sondheim often had to wait endlessly for the man to finish his ambiguous questions and then had to rephrase the questions so they made some sense. Why was this man selected to interview Sondheim?? When Sondheim left the stage he avoided shaking hands with this lame interviewer and probably yelled at the UCLA people for their misguided selection of interviewer. AWKWARD!!
