SLY and ROBBIE IN CONCERT:
Legendary Jamaican rhythm section and production duo Sly and Robbie have been an emblem a model of musical chemistry ever since finding their groove in the mid-'70s. With Sly manning the drums and Robbie holding down the bass, the duo have been a consistent wellspring of rhythmic invention, producing and playing on an estimated 200,000 recordings. From their own funky reggae hits like "Boops (Here to Go)" to their genre-defining production on Chaka Demus & Pliers' seminal dancehall classic "Murder She Wrote", Sly and Robbie have consistently revolutionized the genre, and ticket buyers lucky enough to catch them on their latest round of appearances will be sharing a little piece of reggae history.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Drummer Sly Dunbar and bassist Robbie Shakespeare began collaborating in the mid-'70s after discovering a shared love of Motown, Stax Records, and reggae production techniques. As a rhythm section the duo achieved breakthrough success playing on The Mighty Diamonds' 1976 No. 1 "Right Time", which garnered special attention for Sly's innovative drumming. The duo scored another rhythmic coup in the '80s when they invented the "rockers" reggae beat, which has since become a standard of the genre. In addition to their hit 1987 album Rhythm Killers, Sly and Robbie have played with or produced virtually every notable Jamaican musical artist from the past four decades including Peter Tosh, Beenie Man, and Sean Paul. Their production credits beyond reggae are equally impressive, including work with The Rolling Stones, Grace Jones, and Sting. Back on tour, Sly & Robbie will treat fans to a medley of their most popular material at select North American concerts and jazz festivals.
