NICKEL CREEK IN CONCERT:

Seven years after their 2007 Farewell (For Now) Tour, contemporary bluegrass trio Nickel Creek are making good on their promise of a reunion, hitting the road in support of 2014's A Dotted Line —their first new album since 2005. Featuring innovative fiddle, mandolin, and guitar work, the group's acoustic performances are an impressive display of coordination, highlighted by tight instrumental interplay and intricate vocal harmonies. Celebrating 25 years since their formation, Nickel Creek's 2014 tour will treat fans to their biggest hits alongside material from the new album, with select appearances by country sweethearts the Secret Sisters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed by Chris Thile and siblings Sara and Sean Watkins in 1989, Nickel Creek began performing as pre-teens, playing bluegrass festivals in the '90s while receiving home-schooling between tour dates. Following two early albums, the trio teamed up with country-folk legend Alison Krauss for their self-titled third album, a critical and commercial success that received several Grammy nominations. 2002's This Side proved an even more momentous success, earning the group a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album with its creative blend of indie rock and traditional bluegrass elements. Following the 2005 release of their Grammy-winning fifth album Why Should the Fire Die?, the band went on a seven-year hiatus before making a triumphant return to both studio and stage with 2014's A Dotted Line.

    They were electric!!

by Denize Santana on 10/18/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

My first experience at the Rady Shell. Easy, expensive parking, ate at Joe's Crab Shack and walked in at last minute. Was not thrilled with opening act, and the fact that Nickel Creek started much later. I guess that's routine, but it would have been nice to know how long the entire concert would take, for dog-sitting purposes. Once they got going it was non-stop high energy progressive bluegrass for 1 1/2 hours. I loved it, my husband not so much (he likes more traditional bluegrass). Sara Watkins was the star of the show-not a surprise considering she took lessons from Byron Berline.

    Excellent

by Nature first on 10/18/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

First time at the RS..Beautiful venue and the acoustics were phenomenal. I bought the seats on a hike and didn’t look at the seating chart, but I don’t think it would have mattered, we were quite pleased with our seats (bring a cushion), but the band looked like legos, so happy we had bins and of course the large screens were nice. We took the trolley and overall the evening was magical. We love NICKLE CREEK, their performance was so, so good! Even the crowd was well behaved. If we had one suggestion, don’t say a concert starts at seven when it REALLY starts at 8:30. Seriously could have missed the cover band and would have been OK. Stick to the actual facts people.

    Great High-Energy Concert

by Robin L on 10/17/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

After a lackluster inebriated opening group and longish break,, the STARS of the evening, Nickel Creek, came onstage. They were abounding in enthusiasm to be at the Rady Shell, their hometown, and every moment of the show the crowd returned their music and presence with resounding love and applause. They played the entire hour and a half set without a break, to the point that we audience members marveled at their energy! If you enjoy the group and weren't there, you missed a GREAT evening!

    New favorite

by Chuman Foo on 10/17/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

Nickle Creek at Rady Shell is a new favorite show. The sound is amazing at the venue (which makes sense because the symphony plays there). The band clearly enjoyed playing there. And the Padres donated a short fireworks display!

    Worth the Wait

by MNorgren on 10/16/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

Loved hearing this homegrown trio. I was late learning about them but am now a fan. The Rady Shell is an amazing acoustic venue. The visual production could be improved: there was too much dry ice/smoke but that didn't seem to bother the musicians. There were also spotlights at the back of the stage that faced the audience which were blinding - maybe the performers wanted the audience to share their experience. Who knows... ...and what a hoot Monica Martin was as an opening act...we won't forget her beautiful voice anytime soon.

    Thoroughly enjoyable & beautiful music

by The Kos on 10/16/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

Nickel Creek gave an inspirational performance. They enjoyed performing their music, were appreciative of the audience & the venue. I work this venue as a volunteer usher but once in a while I splurge by buying tickets. I was very happy to have splurged for tickets to see Nickel Creek.

Nickel Creek concert: Martine - The opening act was quite talented. I didn't care for how she tried to make alcoholism amusing. AND Nickle Creek quite talented : No need to be super loud The sound at the SHELL Was amazing beautiful venue. Not crazy a bout the crazy price of a SMALL CAN of WATER

    Nickel Creek at Rady Shell

by Dick on 10/16/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

Loved Nickel Creek. Been wanting to see them for quite a while. My first event at Rady Shell. Impressive facility, but too large for a group like Nickel Creek. Acoustics were fine, but unless you were right up front, it was hard to really see them. The screens on the side helped, but I prefer to see them live rather than on a screen.

Nickel Creek we’re on fire at the Rady Shell on Friday 13/10/23, it was a pitch perfect, joyous and high energy masterclass featuring many new and some legendary older songs. One of those rare concerts when you just wish there was one more encore, and one more set to watch tomorrow…

    Still amazing!

by JIM on 10/16/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

We have been fans for a long time. Have seen Chris and Sarah separately at their solo concerts, but never seen the whole group together. They said they started playing together 34 years ago! Since they are in their 40's, that is pretty special. They played like they have never stopped playing together. Every song was a marvel. They are so good and play so well together. One of the best concerts I have been to in a long time. By the way, the venue of Rady Shell is exceptional. It blows all other venues in Southern California away. The location, seating, amenities and sound system are light years ahead of everyone else. Hopefully, more artists will play there in the future when they come to San Diego.

    Outstanding Concert

by Ken on 10/16/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

Nickle Creek was, as always, simply amazing. Their skill is undeniable, heavenly harmonies, and gave the audience a simply joyful experience. The Rady Shell was one of the best concert venues I've ever been to - and I've been to A LOT of different venues. 10/10 no notes, would do it again.

    Warmup Band

by Issue with Warmup Band on 10/16/23The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park - San Diego

The warmup singer appeared drunk on stage and cursing between songs. More than a little bit. Quite frankly it was bizarre. It was embarrassing to have my daughter and friend attend this. Nickel Creek was wonderful but they need to think about who is the opening act for them in the future.
