NICKEL CREEK IN CONCERT:

Seven years after their 2007 Farewell (For Now) Tour, contemporary bluegrass trio Nickel Creek are making good on their promise of a reunion, hitting the road in support of 2014's A Dotted Line —their first new album since 2005. Featuring innovative fiddle, mandolin, and guitar work, the group's acoustic performances are an impressive display of coordination, highlighted by tight instrumental interplay and intricate vocal harmonies. Celebrating 25 years since their formation, Nickel Creek's 2014 tour will treat fans to their biggest hits alongside material from the new album, with select appearances by country sweethearts the Secret Sisters.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Formed by Chris Thile and siblings Sara and Sean Watkins in 1989, Nickel Creek began performing as pre-teens, playing bluegrass festivals in the '90s while receiving home-schooling between tour dates. Following two early albums, the trio teamed up with country-folk legend Alison Krauss for their self-titled third album, a critical and commercial success that received several Grammy nominations. 2002's This Side proved an even more momentous success, earning the group a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album with its creative blend of indie rock and traditional bluegrass elements. Following the 2005 release of their Grammy-winning fifth album Why Should the Fire Die?, the band went on a seven-year hiatus before making a triumphant return to both studio and stage with 2014's A Dotted Line.

Excellent Music and Vocals - Lighting disaster

by Jessie Hagan on 2/20/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

I loved the show, No fault at all to be found with the performers or their music. The issue is that there as a semi-circle ring of lights around the performers that were focused out into the audience, especially, those of us in the balcony. For probably 2/3s of the show, there was a blinding light directly in my eyes from diagonally across the stage. I can only assume that there was some other poor sole on the other side of the balcony who was being blinded by the corresponding light form our side of the stage. I really cannot understand how a lighting tech could honestly set up a ring of lights, andfucus them into the seats, and not realize that the persons in those seat will not be able to see anything on the stage.

    WOW

by P-doo on 2/20/24Hoyt Sherman Place - Des Moines

I waited for SO many years to see Nickel Creek and I don't even have the words to say how much I loved the show. So much talent and they were so great all around. My words are failing me, but if anyone has a chance to see them. DO IT!!

Love this venue.. hate the house PA system.

by Terry the sound engineer on 2/20/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

I want to balance this review by saying that I love The Palace. It has a great vibe and all the seating is great. Getting in and out is quick and easy. Bar lines are fast. However, this is the third show (Goo Goo dolls, Nathaniel Ratliff, and Nickel Creek) I’ve been to where the house PA system was used (ground stack point source). I prefer sitting in the balcony and the PA system just doesn’t cover that well in the balcony. The mix sounds great, but lacks high end, overall volume, and feels like I’m hearing mostly reflected sound. They need to get a proper covering hanging line array or even a ground stack line array to get the balcony the proper coverage. With as much as Live Nation charges for tickets and the resources available, you’d expect better.

    Tremendous as always

by DTroll on 2/20/24The Louisville Palace - Louisville

We've seen Nickel Creek and/or Chris Thile (in one assemblage or another) and/or Sarah & Sean Watkins at least 10 times over the years. Last weekend's performance at the Louisville Palace (a great place to see a show) was as good as any. They played all of their most popular songs, particularly from their first 2-3 wide release albums. This Side, When you Come back Down, The Lighthouse's Song, Reasons Why, When in Rome.... all the good stuff. at least 4 instrumentals, inc. Smoothie Song, Ode to a Butterfly, In the House of Tom Bombadil & more. Also a nice, tight 35 minute warmup set by British sisters the Staves. My only complaint was that there was floor lighting that directed straight out into the audience, including one trained directly on my retinas. That was distracting. Otherwise, a perfect show.

    Nickel Creek is Phenomenal!!

by Kincaid on 2/19/24Kalamazoo State Theatre - Kalamazoo

Fantastic show!! Love the State Theatre in Kalamazoo, MI. Our seats were great! Nickel Creek's live show is amazing! They are such talented musicians and songwriters, and their live show takes it to a whole new level! The one downside was that I'm getting a little old for a weeknight show that goes until 10:30-ish with an hour drive home afterwards. The next day was a little rough.

A Nickel Creek show is always a fantastic & fun evening. It’s so refreshing to see a band play live and without a background track. Their talent is unmatched!!

Is it possible to become an instrument?

by Kaitlyn on 2/18/24Wexner Center Mershon Auditorium - Columbus

It was a very lovely concert. Each member is an incredible instrumentalist and performer. That may even be an understatement. The Staves did such a wonderful job opening. I am awaiting their release of "I'll never leave you alone"! The lighting was gorgeous too. It is hard to describe in words what it was like to hear "When In Rome"live either. Simply lovely. Do things you'd like despite what you're afraid of, and while you're at it, stream any Nickel Creek (preferably from "Why Should the Fire Die?"album) song.

    Missed it😞

by Rpost on 2/18/24Kalamazoo State Theatre - Kalamazoo

I was so excited as I have been listening to Nickel Creek for years! Unfortunately minutes after sitting down, got a text from babysitter that my kid got sick. Decided to head home. Hopefully someday get to see them!

    Amazing as always

by TJ on 2/17/24Kalamazoo State Theatre - Kalamazoo

I’ve seen Nickel Creek three times now (4 if we count the sound check I crashed…outdoor venue, so no judgements!). NEVER the same concert. ALWAYS amazing. I don’t think they were ever off pitch, despite incredible non-vocal musicianship. I don’t know how they do it, but I’m so happy they do! Can’t wait for the next time! Until then, I’ll be in a Holding Patterrrrrrn!

Great concert, great venue (State Theatre, Kalamazoo, MI)

by K’mish on 2/16/24Kalamazoo State Theatre - Kalamazoo

Nickel Creek really delivered the goods. The band is so tight with its gorgeous harmonies and virtuoso instrumentals. And they are so gracious toward their very appreciative audience. Third time I’ve seen them in concert; looking forward to a fourth.

Nickel Creek on a Monday night

by Jenni on 2/15/24Peoria Civic Center - Peoria

Seeing Nickel Creek perform live is always a treat, but this show was phenomenal… especially for a Monday night in central IL (iykyk)! Their talent is off the charts and the group dynamic is so funny. And I really enjoyed their opener, The Staves. Quality show and worth every penny! ❤️

Still the best live act arouncd

by JoshB on 2/15/24Peoria Civic Center - Peoria

I've been seeing Nickel Creek since 2003 and they are easily one of the best group of performers I've ever seen. The musicianship, dynamics, vocal harmonies are top frickin notch! Never miss a chance to see them; you won't regret it!
