In a one-night only benefit performance, Australian Hugh Sheridan resurrected Anthony Newley , and, as a result, introduced us to two powerhouse entertainers.
Newley's story was told -- and sung -- beautifully from beginning to end of this often funny, but ultimately sad story.
And then there's Hugh Sheridan. Amazing. Brilliant. A perfectly nuanced performance that doesn't merely imitate Newley, but actually embodies him.
It's astounding to watch Sheridan play every stage from teenager to late sixties -- without makeup changes -- and completely capture every stage of the man's life.
New York has seen the great Hugh Jackman on Broadway as Peter Allen, and, currently, three other incredible Australian boys who play Billy Elliot on Broadway and on tour -- now, seeing Sheridan, one has to wonder: what it is about Down Under that produces multi-talented people, who are such acting geniuses?
It's only a matter of time before Hugh Sheridan becomes well-known here; I really hope that this gem of an evening has a life beyond Thursday night's benefit performance.
Broadway's the natural home for true star power -- and Hugh Sheridan's star will be shining for a very long time.
