Matilda didn't meet my high expectations

    by Andy1B on 4/11/16Oriental Theatre - Chicago

I was really excited to see the show as heard great things. I wanted to see in London, but couldn't get tix. So was really happy that it came to Chicago. But the show was just okay. The audio wasn't always clear, had some technical issues. And a lot of the songs were difficult to understand. The actor playing Miss Honey was truly the star of the show, but a lot of the other performances were a lacking or over the top (and not in a good way).

    Front Row Seats at Matilda

by StephanieYoung on 4/11/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Matilda was in one word AWESOME! I purchased front row seats for my daughter and I and they were fantastic, a bit spoiling for us because we could see everything so well. I was a bit worried she may not be able to see over the orchestra curtain because she is 11, but no issues what so ever. Our seats were fabulous. The little girl playing Matilda was phenomenal. It was one of the most special things we did on our Spring Break in Chicago. Love the Oriental and will be back!

    Singing was just ok

by Dianne4 on 4/11/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Attended the April 2 matinee performance with our two granddaughters (ages 9 and 11). The show was not up to any Chicago theatre events that we have attended. The actors, the stage sets etc were not up to the standards of paying $750.00 for four tickets. Definitely not recommending to anyone!

    Thought Matilda would be better

by an1234 on 4/11/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

When the children were on stage or singing it was a 3-1/2 stars. When the adults were on stage or singing it was 2-1/2 stars. Should have been better but not sorry I saw Matilda.

    Matilda was off the mark!

by DMboy on 4/11/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Matilda just couldn't hold my nor my 17 year old daughter's attention - and she grew up loving the movie! None of Matilda The Musical's actors held the stage very well, but the biggest problem was that the British accents and high-pitched voices of the children and mother characters made the dialog and the singing very difficult to understand. Bored to sleep in some parts. Such a shame as we were looking forward to the show for weeks and was to be the highlight of a Chicago trip. Bummer!

Cute but difficult to hear almost everything

by njbt on 4/11/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Luckily we were familiar with the story of Matilda or I'm sure that we would have all been lost. Only a few adult actors were understandable. I don't know if it was the sound system or the fact that children have a difficult time enunciating, especially when singing, but we were reading the closed caption sign most of the night to see what was said which is very distracting. The choreography was amazing but I can see why there were adults added to the school children mix. They were obviously more polished. The choreography and the overall set design were the best parts of the show. Other than that I wasn't feeling like we were seeing an award winning Broadway production. When you could understand what was being said and sang it was great, but unfortunately that didn't happen enough.

    Fabulous young talent

by tinygreeneyes on 4/10/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The young actor who plays Matilda is quite amazing, as is the rest of the cast both young and old. The staging and set design are also quite spectacular, and the musical numbers were very catchy. I did have a slight problem understanding some of the spoken and sung dialog even though the production is wired for sound. I would recommend a sound reinforcement device for those with even mildly poor hearing.

    Fun for all ages

by theaterfan81 on 4/9/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

This is a good musical for kids and adults. The young actors and actresses are very talented. It was a good rendition, only straying from the book with some side stories and only one crucial to this version of the story. The only thing that I found strange were some of the musical numbers. They were either not related to the main story (Telly) or too short to really get into (Naughty).

    Production Value Great!

by cathysings on 4/9/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Let me first say, I was more than excited to see this production after seeing a production number on the Tony Awards last year. The talent and the production value(staging) was well done. What was disappointing was with all the work put into this production, the sound suffered terribly. Between the English dialect and the sound not being well done, as a audience member I missed-with many others-a lot of the story line. You could tell the kids were told to enunciate and speak loudly but the louder they spoke and over enunciating made it even worse. It was a shame because the talent was excellent-especially Matilda. I was seated with 4 others in the Center Orchestra 15 rows from the front of the stage and never anticipated that the sound would be an issue. It greatly affected my enjoyment of the show and left disappointed.

Matilda the Musical was an amazing show!

by Collinsgould on 4/9/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

Wow! What a talented group of actors - from young to adult - they all did an amazing job! So entertaining! We don't get to many plays/musicals - so glad we had the opportunity to see this one in Chicago!

    Sound Problem

by Miltalk on 4/8/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I love the show and saw it in London. If I hadn't seen it before, I would of had no idea of what was going on. The lyrics on some songs were unintelligible. Even dialog had problems. I missed the audience laughter I experienced in London. Can't blame it on the British accents--I saw it in London and understood every word.

    Matilda actors/actresses amazing!

by runfastrn on 4/8/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The show was fantastic, so much energy from so many kids! Sound was terrible in front row balcony. Couldn't hear 75% of what was being said/sung. Disappointed in the sound, loved the show in spite of it.

    Child actors are impressive

by Anonymous on 4/5/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

I was impressed by the performances of the child actors including Bruce, Nigel and Lavender. The show was entertaining and the choreography beautiful. Take a child in your life to see it.

    Pleasantly Surprised!

by CIPN on 4/5/16Oriental Theatre Chicago - Chicago

The staging and choreography are excellent. I wish I had heard and learned the songs ahead of seeing the show because it was hard to understand the lyrics, at times. I already ordered the Broadway cast recording. Although some of he comedy is broad and a little over the top, which is not my style, the overall show is very good. Funny and moving.
