Not a Family Member - Still Enjoyed the Concert!

by Amaznblu1 on 4/30/13Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre - Orlando

While I was not related to any of the talented youngsters who participated in MAYSfest, we attended because a friend of my daughters was playing his final time. We were not expecting the two elementary groups who took the stage first, so the off-key, unpleasant droning was a bit of a shock. My 14-year old turned to me, and mouthed, Ï hate you." Still, as the more veteran musicians took to the stage, I found myself thoroughly enjoying their extraordinary skill and talent. It is obvious they love music, and it is obvious the Mays family has had a great deal to do with that. The concert was stunning, and at times I felt was far superior to performances I've seen at the Bob Carr by much older, professional organizations. However, the parents of these musicians need to learn concert decorum. for instance, you do not yell at your child from the back of the Bob Carr when he/she is on stage. If the announcement is made that there should be no video taping, then don't do it. THere were no less than 18 recording devices in front of us as we tried to enjoy the performance ~ everything from actual video cameras to full-sized I-Pads! To say it was distracting would be the understatement of the year. Also, if your talented player has younger siblings, either leave them at home with Grandma or control them. Kids clapping out of place, tapping their feet to excess, and generally annoying other patrons is no way to thank the Mays family for all the time and energy they've invested in your child. If parents and families treat the concert with the respect it deserves, their children will feel all the more successful for having participated.
