This is the first time i heard this great orchestra live, although as a college student I bought many of their early recordings. It is a truly great orchestra and Charles Dutoit is a great conductor, now an elder statesman after a brilliant career. The program was excellent. I am a particular fan of Russian and French music and of modern music, so I don't go to many concerts, because I don't want to have to sit through a Brahms or Beethoven or Mahler symphony which are a boring and overrated and overscheduled. I would much rather hear Song of the Nightingale, which I was not familiar with but which I loved. I also loved comparing it to Ibéria to see how too very different composers, working at the same time, were doing interesting and innovative things but very different things, Debussy with color. Stravinsky with rhythm. The Rachmaninov was great, both the orchestra and the soloist. I also liked that Dutoit gave us an encore that was like part of the program, part of Daphnis and Chloe, suite #2 rather than some throwaway trifle. With the exception of the Stravisnksy, I had heard all the pieces before but until Dutoit's baton and with this superb orchestra, I felt like i was hearing them for the first time. Perhaps the best concert I have ever been to.
