    Two Masters of Their Instrments

by Coljaz on 11/5/19Lincoln Theatre - Columbus

It was gratifying to see a good audience turnout, even in the rain, for these two masters of their instruments. Though there were two musicians on stage, reedman Ken Peplowski and guitarist Diego, their abilities to expand the sounds of their instruments through rhythmic force and improvisational expansion filled the Lincoln Theater. They both connected with the audience between performances with their humorous attitude. In spite of the large turnout, the availability of these two jazz masters would have been a good opportunity for younger students to hear, though it appeared that the attendance of students was lacking.

Great musicians. Great renditions. For a selective playlist, could attendees vote their favorite pieces when they register?

Wonderful music, we brought my dad and he totally enjoyed the evening as well, lots of memories for all of us. Especially enjoyed seeing Bucky and Ken and Derek still such a presence even though they are well into their 'senior years'.

Classic small group swing lives again at the Folly

by Bigeasy on 12/19/09Folly Theater - Kansas City

The ghost of Benny Goodman came to the stage at the Folly last night in the person of Ken Peplowski. With a consummately tight back-up group of drum, piano and bass, Mr. Peplowski gave his own distinctive spin to some classic Goodman numbers. Not a recreation, but certainly a tribute, the group captured the spirit and energy of great small swing groups of the 30's and 40's but with slightly more modern voicings. In addition to the featured soloist there was ample performance room for the other members of the group and special mention should be made of the piano player, Derek Smith and the bass player who both took extended solos on Fat Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz" and "Bye Bye Blackbird" respectively. All in all, a great evening of traditional jazz that doesn't find it's way to the stage nearly as often as it should.
