Underwhelming Goldstein
by CBC72 on 4/1/16Winter Garden Theatre - TorontoI am a big Jonathan Goldstein fan, so was disappointed with his evening in Toronto. A red flag went up when the person introducing Goldstein appeared completely unprepared to do so. Out of consideration for the audience, he should have come out with a killer intro. Instead the speaker tripped over his words for a few uncomfortable moments and gave a 3-sentence bio. Goldstein started off in top form with two hilarious stories that had the audience bending over laughing in their seats - one of these stories was accompanied by amazing drawings done by a friend of his on stick-it notes. This was great. Then the laughter subsided, the stories were okay, and the delivery stayed EXACTLY the same. All around me were people dozing off. Considering Goldstein's long career, I would think he could have mined it to create an evening we wouldn't forget. Some more thought could have been put into the delivery to make the evening less predictable and monotonous. My friends and I left wondering if this event was nothing more than some contractual obligation he had to carry out - that's how 'soul-less' it felt.
