Maninyas
Choreographer: Stanton Welch
Music: Ross Edwards
Contemporary in design and abstract in
nature, Maninyas is a powerful, exotic
and passionate ballet that explores the
sometimes frightening process of revealing
oneself layer by layer in a relationship.
The Man in Black
Choreographer: James Kudelka
Music: Johnny Cash
Six of Cash’s later songs are given visual
resonance in a suite of dances for an
ensemble of dancers, all in cowboy boots. The choreography riffs off several popular American country-western dance styles.
Tulle
Choreographer: Alexander Ekman
Music: Mikael Karlsson
.
Featuring the full Joffrey company, voiceover
commentary and three large onstage
LED screens, this is a ballet about ballet. Part
homage and part tongue-in-cheek critique,
Ekman displays his fresh wit and serious craft.
Excellent show in a beautiful theatre. Special event for my young ballerina.
The Unique Voices program showed the Joffrey Ballet to be a truly great American company. Each piece was unique in its vision, revelatory in its conception, and flawless in its execution. I immediately recommended it to colleagues who in turn experienced this amazing evening of dance on Saturday. I encourage anyone who wants to see exceptional work of powerful beauty to see one of the remaining performances. A truly outstanding evening in the theatre.
Before the Sat. performance of Unique Voices, there was a meet and greet with a couple performers and the artistic director an hour before the show. Discussion added to the understanding and meaning of the performance. My favorite of the 3 ballets was the last ballet, Tulle. With so many performers on stage, just spectacular! All 3 ballets were great, though.
Tears flow in my face when I watched on the beauty of the dancers. It was great
The first dance was the most interesting, with functional costumes and background curtains. The Johnny cash dance used a recording of his older, used up voice and the dance was boring. The third, Tule, had good dancing but headache-inducing "music". This was not a romantic Valentine's evening!
This piece was amazing. Me and my wife truly truly loved it. It was so diverse and yet so elegant. I loved how it progressed with the movement of dance. We will definitely be going to see it again. Such a pleasant and wonderful time.
We hadn't seen the Joffrey in a while, but we were certainly thrilled we did. This is a group of incredibly talented dancers. The choreography was wonderfully creative. All three segments were equally entertaining, yet different. If you have never seen a ballet, and think it's old fashioned and stuffy, see this! You will love it.
I seldom have seen live ballet, but had a mother who often watched and recorded channel 11's performances. I learned about the grace and flowing movements of such wonderful talent. I will continue to expand my love for the classical movements of song and dance.I am 70 years old and can always have new and exciting joys in my life. This could become a habit.
Very enjoyable performances. The design and choreography were well thought out and well executed. Three unique themes, all with a hearty life of their own. This show does not disappoint!
This show was Great! It had everything. Classic ballet, contemporary, the second act/scene to Johnny Cash was far from what I was expecting for my first ballet. I will go again!
Very interesting and enjoyable evening. We went for a Girls Night Out.
We had a great evening! Interesting twist...Johnny Cash!
Three gorgeous works, each with their own unique style. The eckman is extraordinary.
I bought my mother tickets to this show for Christmas. Little did I know, the performance we attended was opening night of Unique Voices! Our seats were great and it was a very enjoyable evening overall. The three ballet pieces were captivating and well thought out. The last one, Tulle, was our absolute favorite. I haven't seen anything like it! Congratulations to the choreographer! We have decided to make the Joffrey Ballet our annual mother-daughter tradition :)
