About
The Iowa Cubs are a Minor League Baseball team based in Des Moines, Iowa. They play in the International League, which is one of the top minor leagues in the sport. The team's colors are blue, red, and white -- the same colors as their major league affiliate, the Chicago Cubs. The Iowa Cubs are also known as the "I-Cubs" for short.
The team's home stadium is called Principal Park, which has a capacity of about 11,500 fans. It's located in downtown Des Moines, near where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers meet. The stadium first opened in 1992 and was originally called Sec Taylor Stadium. It was renamed Principal Park in 2004, after the naming rights were sold to a local financial services company. When at Principal Park one may notice that the right field wall is higher than the left field wall, which is due to the stadium being located on an old railroad yard.
The Iowa Cubs have had some notable achievements over the years, like winning the league title 1993, when they won the American Association championship. They've also had several memorable moments, such as when they won the Western Division title in 1993 after a walk-off home run by Tuffy Rhodes in the championship game. In 2010, the team was managed by Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg, who was named Minor League Manager of the Year by Baseball America. The team has also produced many successful major league players, including Harold Baines, Joe Carter, and Geovany Soto.
The Iowa Cubs have a rich history and are an important part of the Chicago Cubs organization. They provide a great opportunity for fans in Iowa to see some of the top up-and-coming players in the sport, and they have a loyal following of supporters who come out to cheer them on at Principal Park.
