GASLAMP KILLER IN CONCERT:
LA-based underground hip hop DJ and producer The Gaslamp Killer has been slaying it on the decks for more than a decade, but lately it’s his insane live shows that fans are buzzing about. The club veteran’s performances have become increasingly involved in recent years, bringing his eclectic blend of bass music and psych-rock to life with an ever-growing army of musicians including a string section and horn players. Rolling Stone named his epic 2015 Coachella set one of their festival highlights, and that same month he released the live LP The Gaslamp Killer Experience: Live in Los Angeles. The word “experience” perfectly sums up his epic shows – from his fiery-eyed showmanship to the virtuosic musicianship of his talented band, fans won’t soon forget the wild and wonderful journey of The Gaslamp Killer’s live performances.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
The Gaslamp Killer, aka William Benjamin Bensussen grew up in San Diego and played his first gigs in the city’s Gaslamp District. He moved to Los Angeles in 2006 and helped found the seminal weekly underground hip hop party Low End Theory. His DJ sets made him a local hero, and before long his skills at a producer were earning him praise as well. After releasing several sample-based EPs in the late ‘00s he decided to work with live musicians for his 2012 debut full-length Breakthrough, which was released on Flying Lotus’s Brainfeeder label. The new direction was a success, earning praise from critics and leading to extensive touring. Since then he’s continued to drop jaws with his ever-evolving live show, which he immortalized in 2015 with the release of the live album The Gaslamp Killer Experience: Live in Los Angeles.

Awesome venue - the sound is amazing, the artist lineup is always excellent, there are plenty of restrooms, the place is cooled with legit AC, ample drink options, photography allowed. It's a laid back venue where people who are really there to enjoy the musicians can go to chill, dance and get an intimate view of the artists themselves. Gaslamp Killer was incredible! He chose great artists to play as well - Nick Hook and Edan are amazing. The energy that GK brings to each and every show is unmatched. You can tell he really enjoys what he does. I never dance like I dance to the Killer! Hopefully he comes back to NY soon. Only question I have was there was supposed to be secret guests? Where were they? :)
Not what I was expecting at all. The crowd was static as a result of the Gaslamp Killer constantly dropping the beat/stopping. He would build a little energy and barely get people to move and then would just suddenly drop the beat. It was not a dance party but rather a DJ set to stand still and bob your head to.
