Formula Drift on Tour

In the sports world, the first week of April is commonly associated with the return of Major League Baseball. But car-racing enthusiasts have that timeframe marked on their calendars for a very different reason: the start of Formula Drift season.

Formula Drift is the leading international showcase of the auto-racing phenomenon known as drifting, where drivers intentionally oversteer their vehicles to make them slip and slide across the track in a thrilling display of controlled chaos. (Ever done donuts in your car in an empty parking lot? Now imagine trying to do that continually along a predetermined route without crashing into anything.)

Drifting originated in Japan in the 1970s before gaining traction in the U.S. in the '90s, culminating in the inaugural Formula Drift competition in 2004. Since its launch in Atlanta as a four-round, 16-car competition, Formula Drift has expanded into an eight-round, 32-car championship series, with racing sites spanning California to New Jersey.

In most car races, the winner is determined by one simple factor: who crosses the finish line first. Drifting, however, is actually closer in spirit to figure-skating than traditional racing, with competitors awarded leaderboard points according to three criteria: line, angle, and style. "Line" refers to the drivers' ability to follow a demarcated drift line established by the judges. "Angle" analyzes the drivers' control over their wheel alignment while mid-drift. "Style" essentially is a measure of drivers' fluidity and their willingness to careen as close as possible to the track wall without scraping it.

Formula Drift competitions are traditionally two-day events, beginning with the qualifying round, where drivers perform solo trial runs to accumulate points for a Top 32 placement on the leaderboard. On the second day, the qualifying drivers square off round-robin style in a pair of races where drivers take turns shadowing each other and are scored on their abilities to lead and follow. But even if you're not the sort to obsess over the nitty-gritty of scoring, Formula Drift can be enjoyed on a purely aesthetic level as the most artful and graceful form of professional auto racing.

Worst FDLB I have ever been to.

by Drifter Dave on 4/16/24Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Friday was OK except for the extraordinarily long line to get in. Just a preview of Saturday. The new qualifying format is OK but limits the exposure to the top drivers. Saturday was a total disaster. Waited in line to get into the venue the entire Top 32. Finally got in for the 3 hour break before the Top 16. Then came the rain to completely ruin the day. Went home after the 2nd battle.

    Not enjoyable

by Ana on 4/16/24Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

The event needs to focus on having a more organize and pleasant experience for the audience. We did not fit on the bench sits, there was no room for our legs and there was no way of knowing where your sits were we had to stand up each time someone needed to enter or get out. Restroom were portable potties, not clean. Overall not a great experience for the price.

Fun but needs improvement (just like the past years)

by Matt C on 4/16/24Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

You should never have to wait in line for over an hour to get into a venue even 3 hours after gates open. Their security and entry system is horrible. 2 check lines for the entire event. The new seating area at the end of the run up was great, but you can’t hear anything. The speakers are way too low. The ford mustang activation behind us was loud and annoying the whole time, taking away from the event. Multiple times, the Jumbotron went out, which was your only way to see the remainder of the track. There was less food than usual, no car show, and the whole event seemed pieced together

    Exhilarating, but..

by Money Penny on 4/16/24Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

Entrance was slow, check in station did not accommodate the volume very well. Porta-potty’s were out of toilet paper, wash stations were out of water and paper towels by the halftime break, making things quite unsanitary. The event was laid out well, with many interesting vendors, and ability to interact with contestants.

    Great show bad seats

by Buddy on 4/12/23Long Beach Arena- Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center - Long Beach

I love FD, have been going and watching for years now. I used to live in Washington and go the Evergreen Speedway- it was amazing. This time, in long beach, my seat was basically useless. I was surprised when the ticket people told me there was assigned seating, they sat me in bleacher 26. You couldn't see anything from bleacher 26 but the end of the final turn, then the drivers crossed the finish. I wouldn’t be as mad if I could just see everything on the announcement screen, but there were nome by my spot so I resorted to watching the livestream on my phone which I could've just done at home.
