It was disappointing, and I was glad that tickets were half price. The visual aspect of a blank screen behind the players was boring. To listen to her speak, was very hard, and I was up close. And it was hard to listen to her sing over the brass instruments. It lacked a joyous feeling, that Christmas concerts usually bring.
The Brass Ensemble that was with Elisabeth was fantastic. They showed a wonderful range of talent and that they were enjoying themselves. Elisabeth showed grace and shared her gift of singing wonderfully.
It was a good show to see, just not as expected with more Christmas and Von Trapp classics, and about 1/2 the show was a brass ensamble, not Ms. Von Trapp on stage. The brass players (trumpets x2, Basoon (sp?), trombon, and French horn were very good, so was the piano player; just not what I expected to comprise so much of the show - that they did. And some of the songs weren't Christmas, but other brass arrangements of songs. I wish the whole show consisted of well known Holiday classics...those connect to my own childhood memories wtih family this time of the year, and Von Trap classics... It was billed as Elizabeth Von Trapp and Christmas..expected more of that kind of content. Anyways, would have also liked it if she told more "REAL" stories about the family, Maria, Grand Father the Baron, Uncles and Aunts, her father Kurt, brother and sisters, and what it was like growing up in this family...very fascinating to me...like America's adopted Royal Family from Austria, brough about by defiance to tyranny.
I had spend a significant amount of money purchasing six, fourth row tickets, with the expectation of a fantastic evening with my 81-year old grandmother, my mother, my husband and two children. We drove 45 miles through the winter weather for this special occasion. Instead of a musical eruption of holiday cheer and feelings of Christmas joy, my family was nodding off... quickly hoping for an Intermission, whereas we made the decision to leave the venue. Von Trapp's voice had been reviewed online as 'hauntingly clear', but it was truly difficult to listen to for any extended amount of time. The shrill of her falsetto being projected as loud as she possibly could muster is still echoing in our ears. My husband and oldest son had, at one point, opted to tour the beautiful Landmark Theater, looking for "ghosts", rather than sit through another song. Needless to say, we left during the Intermission... and I would've LOVED to have gotten my money back. Unfortunately, the Von Trapp name was not enough to carry the performance.
