Athena opened our eyes!
by Theatrophile on 8/5/14Des Moines Performing Arts - Stoner Theater - Des MoinesI normally feel the title should have something to do with the subject matter at hand, and Athena is the goddess of reason, intelligent activity, arts and literature; most certainly this production certainly fell under those categories. The problem being that the general population would not relate any of those things to the content of the production and may feel that the title and the subject matter were a bit disjointed. One could also state that this production sprang forth, fully armored for battle from the forehead of William Johnson of the DMACC theatre department. The thespians were energetic in their characters and seemed to flow well together. Life on the stage could easily be a life-long career or an occasional folly for any of the cast. The subject matter of the production made one think, and I feel it could be lost on the general population (of both DMACC students as well as the public in general), which only emphasizes the sad state to which our society is falling into as we speak. Although there are some slapstick moments and verbal zingers, this isn't a production for one who is into instant gratification. Be prepared to think and reflect and assess where society is heading.
