CENTRO-MATIC IN CONCERT:
After nearly two decades together, beloved alt-country outfit Centro-Matic announced that their December 2014 tour dates would be their last -- meaning fans have one last chance to see them in action. The band's guitar-heavy, Americana-infused sound is rich with nostalgia yet full of contemporary edge, making for a dynamic concert experience that ranges from grunge-influenced tracks like "Atlanta" to modern rock numbers like "Iso-Residue". On their Centro-Matic Farewell Tour the band promises to pull out all the stops, performing career-spanning sets that will keep their inimitable energy fresh in ticket buyers’ minds for years to come.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Texas-based Centro-Matic began in 1995 as the bedroom recording project of prolific singer-songwriter Will Johnson. Early releases like 1996's Transistor EP and the Redo the Stacks LP featured Johnson performing all the instrumental parts, but by 1997 he was playing full-band shows with bassist Mark Hedman, drummer Matt Pence, and multi-instrumentalist Scott Danborn -- a lineup that remains intact to this day. The group holed up in an Illinois studio and recorded 60 songs together, and in 1999 they made their debut with two albums -- the quiet Navigational LP and the more bombastic The Static vs. The Strings, Vol. 1 LP. The critically acclaimed releases drew the band out for extensive touring, and their nuanced sound and passionate performances on the road earned them a considerable fanbase. A string of acclaimed records followed in the '00s, and in 2011 the group released their tenth album Candidate Waltz. They followed up in 2014 with their 11th album Take Pride in Your Long Odds, another critically acclaimed effort that will feature prominently on their late-2014 Centro-Matic Farewell Tour.

by coldfingaz on 7/11/11Mercury Lounge - New YorkI've seen Centro-matic about 10 times since around 2000, including at least 3 or 4 shows at the Mercury Lounge in NYC. They put on a consistently great & very musical performance that rocks. Though it amazes me that they aren't playing much bigger places, I can't complain since the intimate Mercury Lounge is one of the best venues in New York (if not the entire country). Will Johnson & company always bring a balanced set, and this was no exception. While not surprisingly a bit heavy on songs from Candidate Waltz, this only showcased how strong this new record is as everything fit in seamlessly with older material. Oh, and those shiny new Creston Electric guitars that both Johnson & Mark Hedman played sounded fabulous.

by dennyoconnor on 7/3/11Mohawk Place - Buffalothis show was so good. really, really good. when you see a band having fun, it's contagious. and the setlist was like they read my wishlist. if they keep coming to buffalo (or rochester, syracuse, ithaca, toronto), i'll be there every time.
