About
AMAZING GRACE is a world premiere musical based on the awe-inspiring true story behind the world’s most beloved song. A captivating tale of romance, rebellion and redemption, this radiant production follows one man whose incredible journey ignited a historic wave of change.
John Newton (Tony Award nominee Josh Young), a willful and musically talented young Englishman, faces a future as uncertain as the turning tide. Coming of age as Britain sits atop an international empire of slavery, he finds himself torn between following in the footsteps of father — a slave trader — and embracing the more compassionate views of his childhood sweetheart. But when a perilous voyage on the high seas finds John in his darkest hour, a transformative moment of self-reckoning inspires a blazing anthem of hope that will finally guide him home.
Brimming with emotion and adventure, AMAZING GRACE is an unforgettable musical saga that captures the spirit of history’s sweetest and most powerful sound: freedom.

by DebbyC55 on 11/4/14Bank of America Theatre - ChicagoWe have attended many theater shows in Chicago, as well as New York City Broadway. This was by far the best musical presentation we have ever seen. The story is so moving, the acting superb, especially Josh Young. We were fortunate enough to be seated in the second row, center, and the emotions on the actors faces were so deep and moving. Of course the story itself is so full of redemption and grace that together with the amazing acting and singing - it was almost overwhelming. The only downside was that we attended the final show in Chicago, and I wanted to go back and take relatives and friends. Now we will have to wait and see it again on Broadway.....
Rating: 5 out of 5 memorable musical
by rainbowgardener on 11/4/14Bank of America Theatre - ChicagoThe musical message has now prompted us to read Newton's biography. In this day of 'in-your-face' Simsonsque attitudes and politics it was encouraging to see how 1 man joined with a few to bring about enormous positive societal change. The staging was very imaginative and enabled the audience to be part of several different environments. The music, lyrics and choreography added to the story-line to bring about the message. Costumes were stunning! It should go to Broadway!! The cruelty endured by so many was brought about without being maudlin.. 1 suggestion - work on enunciation in some of the lyrics..

by 52Kris on 11/4/14Bank of America Theatre - ChicagoThe cast of Amazing Grace was all that. They had beautiful, powerful voices. The staging, music, and costumes were beautiful. At times the action seemed to drag a bit, particularly in the first act. This can be forgiven because of the impact of the story and the performances of the actors.

by grammargal on 11/4/14Bank of America Theatre - ChicagoSets were terrific! Character of Thomas was definitely Broadway star material. He got a standing ovation--the only one who did. The leads are good--and need some work to be more animated. Broadway is going to be tough for them if they don't put more emotion into their characters.
Rating: 5 out of 5 Amazing Grace- truly better than my expectations
by Autybug on 11/4/14Bank of America Theatre - ChicagoI was expecting a nice show with nice songs, and an underlying political agenda. Faith-based shows and movies tend to be cheap and cheesy. (truly a tragedy!) BUT, I was completely floored and blown away by the depth and tension of the story line- it was much richer than I had supposed it would be. And the timeless and even Spiritual truths laid out in the show made it real and applicable, not merely entertainment. The music was great - the songs were so well written that I was be delighted to own a soundtrack. I don't always enjoy new music, especially in a new show (I'm not even fond of the Wicked soundtrack, only 1 or 2 hit songs there) but most every song in the score is worth hearing again. That is a big deal to me. I will definitely find a way to see this show on Broadway!

Rating: 4 out of 5 It's a hit!
by Critical100 on 11/3/14Bank of America Theatre - ChicagoI've seen a number of shows in pre-Broadway previews in Chicago, including "Big Fish" and "The Last Ship." "Amazing Grace" was by far the most polished and the closest thing to a likely Broadway hit. In addition to great music, the story line is compelling. While the choreography is sporadic, it is nonetheless entertaining and well-blended with the story line.
