Mixed Bag
by cynthus on 2/25/13Times Union Ctr Perf Arts Moran Theater - JacksonvilleOn the night we attended the 60s Folk Reunion, Melanie said she had a cold. She should have stated that up front, because when she started singing, the audience all began looking at each other . . . look what's happened to her voice, ma!! When she talked, it was pretty cryptic, but that's probably usual for her. Although I've always loved her songs, Melanie's 20 minutes were 19 too long. She should have turned her time over to the Kingston Trio and gone back to bed. Sorry, Melanie! She was followed by a long set by the Lovin' Spoonful, who did not disappoint. They definitely "showed up," doing all their hits plus more. They sounded a bit older, of course, but they entertained with excellent musicianship and comaraderie. Quite satisfactory. The Kingston Trio, who wound up the evening, were absolutely wonderful, playing with great gusto and happy enthusiasm. They were in great voice, and their fine musicianship was also in evidence. Their lead singer summarized the history of the Trio's members with humor, told a few jokes, and generally kept the whole thing moving briskly along. You would never know they're as old as they are! My only criticism of the Trio was that their set was too short, but they've recorded too many great songs over the years to do them all on a three-way split bill.
