About

With quick-witted dialogue and a playful score, 1776 dramatizes the impassioned debates of Philadelphia's Second Continental Congress. As George Washington sends updates from the military front, patriots John Adams, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson attempt to persuade the 13 colonies to separate from British rule. Based on the letters and memoirs of America's founding fathers, this classic, Tony Award-winning musical showcases the principles, pride and determination that influenced the birth of our nation.

    1776 was great

    by Babyduck2 on 5/2/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

Everything about it was very good. Abigail Adams didn't get the recognition she deserved. Her's was the best voice. Rutledge was OK, but his voice was too high for the part. Didn't compare to the actor/singer in the movie. John Adams was excellent. I understood many words to the songs that I had never understood on the video, even though I have seen the video 3-4 times.

    1776 was honest history.

    by Werth2 on 5/2/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

I was reminded how challenging the birth of our nation was and how fortunate as a nation we were to have people of such honesty and clarity as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and John Adams. Without Washington's military skills, Jefferson's writing skills, and Adams perseverance, the Declaration of Independence would not have been written. And thankfully we also had Ben Franklin with humor and wisdom.

    1776 Was Inspirational

    by Theatergoer46 on 5/2/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

This presentation of 1776 was truly inspirational. During these times of a dysfunctional Congress, it was good to see that our Founding Fathers had similar concerns about their Continental Congress. There was much to be learned from the humorous telling of how the Declaration of Independence came to be. In fact, 1776 is a mirror that 437 elected officials who work a few blocks away from Ford’s Theater should look into and absorb the message: put your politics aside and act for our country. A first step might be to pass a budget that will responsibly cut the deficit.

I thoroughly enjoyed this stage production. As someone who had seen the movie beforehand, I wasn't sure if I would like it (the movie was not my favorite at all). But seeing the show lives makes it 200% better. The characters were hilarious, and as someone who enjoys political history, I loved seeing our Founding Fathers in such a whimsical light. Plus, seeing it at Ford's Theatre made it all the more historical. Definitely recommend.

I loved everything about this play. The casting and acting were great, the set was just right, and the play itself is wonderful. I loved the humor throughout and the way it captures the sense of the history of the time.

The talent at Ford's is always amazing! I enjoyed this musical in the movie theatre as a child and was so thrilled to take my own young son to see it performed on stage. Thank you for a marvelous night of entertainment... and a bit of history, to boot! ;)

    1776 is a Gem!

    by cb1955 on 5/2/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

1776 is a delightful, imaginative and entertaining musical about the creation of the Declaration of Independence. This particular revival at Ford's Theater features terrific actors and takes place in a theater with historical significance in its own right. I have seen this show twice before on Broadway and this version is completely up to par with its New York predecessors. It's wonderful for every age. Moreover, what the viewer will realize is that the challenges faced by our forefathers amazingly resemble those facing our current Congress. If you're in DC, it should be on your list and take advantage of the wonderful Ford's theater tours before you catch the show.

1776 is a crisp production. While it features a strong acting cast, the singing was a bit uneven, but it doesn't hurt the spirit or quality of the show. Everyone interested in history can appreciate the drama at stake. Seeing it at Ford's Theater is a bonus. Go while you can!

1776 was American history in a fun way

by Funhistorian on 5/2/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

The play is much better than the movie. The small theater (Ford's) and the excellent performances made you feel part of the Continental Congress. It was funny, well done and very entertaining.

Wonderful show except the Liberal rant

by MSBar on 4/27/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

An Absolutely wonderful show with the exceptions I will note. The cast did a wonderful job. We watched it in the company of several elementary, Jr. and Sr. High School Student groups on tours. It was a great history lesson that I wish I could have gotten in the 40's/50's. The specific role of the signers is itself a great history lesson. I wish they had not included the "Right vs. Left" skit in which the Right was portrayed as against Freedom and the Left was portrayed as for Freedom. It was patently wrong, political and obviously biased for the Right wingers. Shame on you. It was unfair to the students. History shows that the opposite was true. Can anyone imagine the modern Left as being for something like a revolution? I suspect the Tea Partiers would be closer. It left me with an uncomfortable feeling that Young people are being indoctrinated rather than educated. That "Right vs. Left" diatribe will probably be the biggest impediment to an otherwise outstanding show and performance. Also, it was a little too sexually explicit, but then what would an old man know nowadays. Is that how we teach the youngsters now? Love the Ford's Theater. ... RDM, Veteran, PhD.

    One of my all-time favorites!

    by anstsia916 on 4/24/12Ford's Theatre - Washington

This has been one of my favorite musicals of all time for over 30 years now, since I saw the film version back in hs. This Ford's Theatre production was fantastic, the intimate setting brought everyone so much closer to the action, and as expected, I'm still humming the tunes on a daily basis. Everyone was brilliant but the actor who portrayed John Adams, in particular, stole the show.
