PARLIAMENT-FUNKADELIC IN CONCERT:

Parliament-Funkadelic has influenced generations of funk, R&B, and hip hop musicians with their infectious grooves and psychedelic stage shows. Now the world’s funkiest collective is back on tour to tear the roof off the sucker. Bandleader George Clinton masterfully conducts the vocalists through every harmonious twist as the band delves deeper and deeper into their down and dirty jams. The horns still blow, the drums still bump, and the bass still booms, but new school fans will also appreciate the hip hop and electronica flourishes this freaky fellowship has added to their signature sound. Whenever Parliament-Funkadelic hits the stage they’re sure to get ticket buyers singing along and shaking their booties with p-funk anthems like “Atomic Dog”, “Flash Light”, and “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)”.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

George Clinton (born 1941 in Kannapolis, NC) showed an intense interest in music at an early age, forming his first doo wop group, The Parliaments, when he was only 14. He then worked briefly as a staff songwriter for Motown before starting several funk collectives, most notably Parliament and Funkadelic. Both groups began to score hugely influential and successful hits like “Maggot Brain”, “Up for the Down Stroke”, and “Give Up the Funk (Tear the Roof off the Sucker)”. In the early ‘80s the groups consolidated to Parliament-Funkadelic, and they continued to wow fans in performance with outlandish, sci-fi-inspired costumes and stage props as well as dozens of band members on stage at a time. In addition to Clinton, the group has featured contributions from some of the biggest names in funk such as Bootsy Collins, Bernie Worrell, and Eddie Hazel. The band’s mind-expanding grooves and psychedelic concept albums proved hugely influential, helping them get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997. The collective continues to soldier on, releasing First Ya Gotta Shake the Gate in 2014 and bringing their futuristic funk to audiences around the world with the same family-style stage shows.

    George is 80.

by Gregory on 5/28/24The Paramount - Huntington

Terrific show. Everyone on stage kicks it. Clinton’s grandson on lead guitar rocks it & his granddaughter sings & shakes it. Don’t know his name but the very tall singer is excellent well. No weak links on this chain,

    I Just Want to Testify

by The Funk on 5/28/24The Paramount - Huntington

I have seen George well over a dozen times. Most times I leave energized and satisfied. A few times I have left wishing for more in the best possible way. This time I left wishing for more, but not in the good way. They only played about 5 Parliament songs, and for those they didn't play the full song. There are so many excellent Parliament songs. They could have pen the full 1:45 that they were on stage going from song to song and having the house rocking. Instead they did Jump, Jump and a few other non-mothership songs. I understand that it is the grandchild generation running the show and not the Starchild child talent, but they are missing an opportunity to share the George magic while we can. Maybe next time.

    Wild

by Pete on 5/28/24The Paramount - Huntington

One of the wildest, most entertaining shows I have ever seen. Started a little slowly after the amazing warm up band ‘dumpstaphunk’…but soon it became evident this band is from Another planet. Very memorable show from the front row! Thank You Scottie Clinton and God’s weapon for making it even more intimate for me! #wooooo

    Underwhelming

by Lilac on 5/28/24The Paramount - Huntington

I've been a huge fan of Parliament for years and I expected a lot more. The sound was very inconsistent and the timing was off a lot. The overall sound was very all over the place. I felt like they didn't play many of their greatest hits.

    Where to start

by Bobby D on 5/25/24The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

Omg, i love the genre and the groove but… the sound was dreadful (just one big indecipherable cacophony), and the band was rambling. It was an embarrassment to live music. Fortunately the night was saved by the cool friends i was with and the people dancing around me who were all wearing ear plugs.

    They were ok

by DH on 5/25/24The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

The show was fun, but they were not very put together and the sound system was pretty terrible and muffled.

    A cacophonous wall of sound

by Rocket 88 on 5/25/24The Wellmont Theater - Montclair

The opening act, Dumpstaphunk, in their one-hour set came across better, both musically and sound-wise than the headliner. As for P-Funk, the talent was there, but there were simply too many people on the stage, several seemingly just strolling on willy-nilly and then exiting just as randomly. George Clinton spent most of the show seated, center stage, narrating and reciting. But hey - the guy's 82 years old, and it's his music the band is playing, so he gets a pass. But my main gripe concerns the sound. During the show I thought I was hearing it as a cacophonous wall of noise due to my tinitis, but afterwards I heard other attendees voicing the same opinion. Simply put, the consensus was that the sound was awful. I don't necessarily blame the band - the sound they hear would be coming from the monitors at the edge of the stage. Whomever was responsible for mixing the sound for the audience needs to go back to school. I really wanted to enjoy this show - seeing P-Funk was on my bucket list. But, all the same, God bless George Clinton.
