About

Jacob Collier In Concert

Jacob Collier has long had a voice and talent far beyond his years. The North London, England-based vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, arranger, composer, producer, and all-around music theory prodigy has music in his blood — literally. Collier's mother, Susan, is a music teacher, conductor, and violinist at London's Royal Academy of Music, the same place his grandfather taught. As a kid, Jacob attended The Purcell School for Young Musicians and performed in productions of Mozart's The Magic Flute and Benjamin Britten's The Turn of the Screw.

But it wasn't until Collier began experimenting on his own that his music career took off. At age 17, he began uploading complex music videos that showed every vocal and instrumental part of a song, including keys, strings, percussion, and even as many as 14 vocal harmonies. These impressive videos, featuring covers of songs by artists like Stevie Wonder, Burt Bacharach, and George Gershwin, quickly went viral, enough to get the attention of legendary musician Quincy Jones. Around the same time, a PhD student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Media Lab began working with Collier on a one-man multimedia experience to capture all of his talents at once in a live setting.

By 2015, the then 20-year-old was ready to debut his technologically stunning show, featuring effects like 3D video loops and a vocal harmonizer, in London. Soon after, he took the show to Switzerland's Montreux Jazz Festival, where he opened for Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, and then onward to stages across the globe.

Already a master performer, Collier soon got to work on his debut album, In My Room, which came out in summer 2016. Just like his shows, the album was all Jacob — he wrote, arranged, played every instrument, and recorded the entire album on his own, all in his family's London home. The following year, two of the covers featured on the album, Stevie Wonder's "You and I" and ‘The Flintstones' theme song "Flintstones," won Grammy Awards for Best Arrangement.

After two-and-half grueling years on the road, including collaborations and performances with orchestras from around the world, Collier took time to work on his follow-up release. He announced that his second album would actually be a four-volume set, with the first volume, Djesse (Vol. 1) appearing in late 2018. Stay tuned for plenty more music from this unstoppable phenom.

    Phenomenal!!...and meh

by RonFromSantaFe on 6/1/24Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

Big plus #1: the friendliness of the LN staff while waiting in the line outside. We felt welcome even before getting in the building. Big plus #2: Jacob Collier - one of the finest musicians on the planet, the Mozart of our times, or better. Plus his spirit is so uplifting it can make everyone there a better person. Minus #1: Given that the Fillmore Auditorium has very few seats, by the time Jacob came on stage the vast majority of people had been standing for 2.5 hours, not counting the time standing outside to get in. By the end, they had been standing 4.5 hours. The opening act should have started on time unless there were technical issues, and could have been shorter. Minus #2: If you're up front, the kick drum levels were way too loud. My pant legs were flapping against my legs, and I was seated behind a barrier. Especially for the opening act, her kick drum all out of context musically with the two-guitar singer-songwriter style.

Not the best venue for Jacob

by Lephty on 6/1/24Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

The show itself was outstanding on every level. But IMO the Fillmore is not the best venue for an artist like him. GA area is too big, sightlines are not great and sound is just OK.

by Tom on 6/1/24Paramount Theatre - Seattle

SUPER ULTRA HYPER MEGA Jacobean adventure was an utter delight. Musicians, set design, support crew, stage presence, audience choir and audience beatbox. So much joy and passion in the room. My expectations were Super, but you guys definitely added the ultra hyper mega. Thank you for who you are, and for inviting us into your room.

Love Jacob, but now know where not to sit.

by Davidlov on 6/1/24Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

The Fillmore is a beautiful old building. Due to the limited areas of actual seating versus standing, I purchased four box seats, but their location left us behind people in the closer box, which involved too much neck strain. The sound didn’t seem great there either. Given the price we paid, I expected much better seats. Jacob Collier is a musical savant and his djesse 4 album is his best. Given where we were seated, I hoped for being more “in” his energy sphere than we were. Live and learn!

    Top Concert of the year!!

by Benny K on 6/1/24Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

Jacob Collier doesn't disappoint this tour. He went all out in Denver and played a 2 hour and 30 set without a break or walk off. He played all the way until the venue shut off his Mic!! The venue was packed! So make sure you get there during doors. But an inspirational performance, that tackles a bunch of emotions. Mostly loneliness, love, and enjoying life. The Audience Choir is the best fulfilling audience bit! Go have fun!

The most musical show I HAVE EVER SEEN...

by Nichromium on 6/1/24Fillmore Auditorium (Denver) - Denver

I am a musician for 60+ years. I have seen a thousand shows... live, online, Broadway, etc. This was the MOST musical event I have ever attended. JC is the most prodigious musician I have ever seen. I was blown away by the sincerity, humility, talent, creativity, variety, harmonic beauty, melodic creativity he shared with us. Jacob Collier is one of the best musicians on the planet and will be for a long time. Don't lose an opportunity to see him. You will be astonished.

JCollier - AMAZING! But no chairs???

by Caressa on 5/30/24Paramount Theatre - Seattle

Jacob Collier’s talent is mind blowing. He is definitely beyond the scope of Mozart. I’d go to every concert if his if I could. HOWEVER - paid for an excellent seat, but it wasn’t there - taken out en lieu of a mosh pit experience for some. I ended up sitting so far away from the stage that I wished I’d brought my opera glasses. Jacob brought his A-game and did not disappoint! The venue, though beautiful, pulled the seats out from under me and many others I visited with. Sad!
