ZAZ IN CONCERT:

French jazz-pop chanteuse Zaz has been serving up her fresh-faced take on Gallic musical traditions ever since her 2010 debut. In concert, her optimistic lyrics, buoyant voice, and penchant for scat singing make for a decidedly festive experience, and feel-good hits like "Je Veux" only add to the fun. Zaz delighted fans on tour in support of sophomore album Recto Verso in 2013, with more appearances scheduled for 2014.

BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:

Born in Tours, France, Zaz studied music in her childhood before earning a scholarship to attend music conservatory in Bordeaux. Singing in various jazz and blues outfits during the '00s, she developed a style as unique as it is indebted to legendary singers like Ella Fitzgerald and Edith Piaf. Her self-titled 2010 debut album was a huge success, topping charts throughout Europe on the strength of infectious singles like "Je Veux" and leading to an international tour. 2013 follow-up Recto Verso was a similar success, going double platinum and bringing Zaz back on the road for more tour dates in 2014.

    Mediocre output

    The show started about 15 minutes late as the crowd took time to fill the theater. The stage was bare, with no big screens, and really low lighting (making my videotaping very dark and noisy). The band was sparse, with only a drummer, a keyboard, a bass and an acoustic guitar. Zaz is her old self, full of contagious energy and an incredible voice; she alone is worth the admission price. A few songs into the set, she managed to make the audience stand up for a rousing "que vendra". This would happen again with other songs, like "On s'en remet jamais" and of course, "Je veux". The sound was great; wish I could say the same for the sight. Zaz did just one incredibly long set of almost 2 hours. Overall, a great experience at the end of which she had to be physically hauled in, but came right back out to her fans' adulation. Two wishes: better lighting and a couple big screens.

    Magnifique!

    I have followed her for a few years and think she is one of the brightest stars in music in the world. She is incredibly talented and her style range is impressive, from folksy music to old french songs to spanish romantic songs. She charmed the crowd very quickly with her energy and huge charisma. We wanted to sing with her so badly but we all felt silly butchering french in front of her ! By the end of the show, we all felt as her best friends after we got to see just how engaged she was and just how TERRIFIC she is as an artist and entertainer. Zaz deserves far more visibility in the USA and I think a collaboration would be fantastic. The Fox was perfect for this concert. Awesomeness all around, oui!

    Zaz has a lot of energy and a nice voice which she showed on stage. Her performance was excellent and even the fact that she almost didn't speak any English but only French didn't have a negative impact.

    Nonstop 1 and an a half hour performance. Great artist with a powerful voice, great songs, and who put on a terrific show together with her musicians. Highly recommended. Glad we were there
