About WFG Continental Cup of Curling

Established in 2001, the WFG Continental Cup is one of the curling community's most exciting tournaments. Modeled after golf's Ryder Cup, the event offers a wide range of competitions taking place over a four-day period each year. Tournaments have featured some of the world's greatest curlers, including Olympians and World Champions.

In the Continental Cup of Curling, it's truly North America vs. everyone else. Team North America comprises two men's and two women's teams chosen by the Canadian Curling Association; the other teams are chosen by the United States Curling Association and the World Curling Federation.

The World Curling Federation presides over the rinks and matches. There are five main categories: mixed doubles, singles, skins, and (newly added for 2019) team scramble and mixed team scramble. Historically, North America has dominated the event, winning eight of the championships and placing in numerous ties. By comparison, Canada (which competed alone in 2015 without the rest of North America) and Europe have each won once, and Team World has won once.

The World Financial Group sponsors the Continental Cup, which in 2019 once again takes place at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, where it was held in 2014 and 2017. Other host cities have included Calgary; Regina; and London, Ontario.

Team North America's current coach is three-time Brier and two-time World Champion Jeff Stoughton. North America's 2019 captain is Olympic-medal-winning curler Pete Fenson. Fenson won USA Curling Athlete of the Year in 2003, 2005, and 2011. Team World's coach is Fredrik Lindberg, who has represented Sweden at the 2010 and 2014 Olympics and has appeared in three World Curling Championships.

First live Curling event, but defintely NOT my last

by Dave on 1/22/19Orleans Arena - Las Vegas

Curling is an oddity in the USA. But if you take the time to watch a few matches on TV, it is thoroughly engrossing and intensely interesting. I was apprehensive about attending - in the stands I felt like the view of the action wouldn't be as good as on TV with a half dozen camera angles. Also, there were 3 matches going on simultaneously which seemed daunting. (Of course, these concerns were moot, as this wasn't televised on any network I know of in the US. Also, sometimes the broadcaster would select a match I didn't want to see.) I was wrong. By the second day, I had it down on how to watch multiple matches at once. Boyd Gaming also supplied full event ticket holders with a listening device to hear the Canadian TSN broadcast, which was shown on the big screen. It was an absolutely amazing experience. The last thing is the fans - I don't think I have ever been anywhere with fans as nice as those in attendance at the Continental Cup. Everybody was polite and, even when things were looking bad, jovial and friendly. Whether discussing the weather or learning to curl, they were great to be around.

To see the curlers this close was a real treat and the fact that the professional curlers talk with you in the crowd shows that the curlers appreciate the fans

This was a very fun event! Our seats were great, the arena was clean, and everybody that was there was very happy to be there! Curling is such a cool sport, and I'm glad that more people are getting interested in it!
