We went to see Matilda at 7:30pm on the last day of 2018. Walnut Street Theater was beautiful as always, with a real sense of history and passion.
If you're bringing children to see the show, you should be aware that it has a long runtime (2.5 hours!) and contains mild innuendo. (Some suggestive butt-slapping and pelvic thrusting.) The theatrical British accents assumed by the American cast make some of the dialogue difficult to understand, even for adults.
Still, the play is deeply enjoyable. Great story, amazing music and choreography, and terrific performances by the cast. The standouts to me were Jemma Bleu Greenbaum as Matilda and Ian Merrill Peakes as Miss Trunchbull. Greenbaum really commanded the stage and managed to get across the complexity and emotion of being Matilda with just a word or a stance in a way that seemed genuine. And "genuine" is a hard adjective to come by in stage performances. Ian Peakes gave The Trunchbull a knowingly gleeful malevolence that was such a joy to watch, at one point even working the audience for a moment and threatening to cut off an audience member's "hipster beard." At the same time, he channeled the actual evil of the character skillfully, making sure that The Trunchbull was recognizably the antagonist and not just comic relief.
The lack of splashy effects (Philadelphia isn't Broadway) actually enhanced the experience for me, because the actors HAD to be incredible and the choreography HAD to be breathtaking.
I highly recommend seeing this show at the Walnut Street Theater before it ends in a few days.
