    Fantastic production; great performances!

    by T. B. on 1/9/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

First show I’ve seen at the Walnut Street Theater and I couldn’t have been more pleased with the production. Ellie Zur was wonderful as Matilda. I hope to see another show there soon

Another entertaining show at the Walnut

    by S. R. on 1/7/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The shows at the Walnut Street Theater are always fantastic. The performers are talented and the theater is small enough so that there isn't a bad seat in the house. The December/January show is always full of amazing children who are so well rehearsed that they are polished and professional. It is possible to get tickets for under $50. A great deal for a super performance. Seeing Matilda was a wonderful experience.

It was great. Just about every seat is good.

I went with my 6 year old granddaughter. She loved it and got to meet the performers after the school in the lobby. It was a top shelf performance

    Not so great!

    by V. P. on 1/6/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

It was so hard to understand the words the main character was saying along with some of the others. My little section had to keep asking each other that song they were singing or what they were saying. On top of that, the place had the AC on. It’s 40 degrees outside. My section all had to put their heavy winter coats on while sitting there. A few people actually got up and moved to seats further away but in a different section because of the cold. Was extremely upset we spent that kinda of money for that.

    Very Good

    by M. M. on 1/3/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The kids were extremely talented and my favorite was Ms. Trechbull!!! She (he) was sooo talented and funny! The overall show felt a bit too long and I could’ve done without the whole “story scenes” in the library... they kind of weren’t really needed in my opinion. Also, would have liked to see more Matilda’s “magic”.

    Great show! Wonderful family experience

by Ryan on 1/3/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The show had us bursting with laughs, smiles, and tears. The children did an AMAZING job with each role and their English accents were on point. The only negative comment I can think of is the amount of unnecessary scenes in the show. It lasted from 7:30 to 10:45 which was perfectly fine; but sometimes the musical numbers selected came across as repetitive.

    Lengthy Show, Lots of Fun!

by Ari on 1/3/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

We went to see Matilda at 7:30pm on the last day of 2018. Walnut Street Theater was beautiful as always, with a real sense of history and passion. If you're bringing children to see the show, you should be aware that it has a long runtime (2.5 hours!) and contains mild innuendo. (Some suggestive butt-slapping and pelvic thrusting.) The theatrical British accents assumed by the American cast make some of the dialogue difficult to understand, even for adults. Still, the play is deeply enjoyable. Great story, amazing music and choreography, and terrific performances by the cast. The standouts to me were Jemma Bleu Greenbaum as Matilda and Ian Merrill Peakes as Miss Trunchbull. Greenbaum really commanded the stage and managed to get across the complexity and emotion of being Matilda with just a word or a stance in a way that seemed genuine. And "genuine" is a hard adjective to come by in stage performances. Ian Peakes gave The Trunchbull a knowingly gleeful malevolence that was such a joy to watch, at one point even working the audience for a moment and threatening to cut off an audience member's "hipster beard." At the same time, he channeled the actual evil of the character skillfully, making sure that The Trunchbull was recognizably the antagonist and not just comic relief. The lack of splashy effects (Philadelphia isn't Broadway) actually enhanced the experience for me, because the actors HAD to be incredible and the choreography HAD to be breathtaking. I highly recommend seeing this show at the Walnut Street Theater before it ends in a few days.

    Great Theater

    by S. H. on 1/1/19Walnut Street Theatre - Philadelphia

The show was great for all ages - even my teenage daughter enjoyed herself. And, every seat in the theater is a good seat with a great view of the stage. The only negative is the limited number of bathrooms caused lines around the entire first and third floors. Also, they only had two of the three snack bars open and those of us near the end of the line were late getting back to our seats after intermission.
