About

Bon Iver in Concert

With his 2007 debut album, Justin Vernon demonstrated the therapeutic, soul-cleansing properties of isolating yourself from the world in a wooden shed.

Distraught over breakups with both his girlfriend and his band (DeYarmond Edison) while recovering from a bout of mononucleosis, Vernon disappeared into the woods of his native Wisconsin in the dead of winter. He emerged with For Emma, Forever Ago, a disarming set of raw folk-rock confessionals fueled by tense acoustic strums and Vernon's pained, preternaturally soulful croon. (In keeping with the album's frigid recording environment, Vernon adopted the alias Bon Iver — a variation on the French term "bon hiver," or "good winter," which he heard used as a salutation on the 1990s TV show Northern Exposure.)

The album's unvarnished approach made Vernon an anomaly in a North American indie-rock scene otherwise dominated by the maximalist likes of Arcade Fire and Animal Collective, but its intense emotional wallop reverberated far beyond the underground. After his songs permeated the mainstream through placements on shows like Grey's Anatomy and House, Vernon found himself both getting sampled on and providing backing vocals to Kanye West's 2010 magnum opus, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

That guest appearance transformed Vernon into an unlikely hot property in the hip-hop world, with the singer later turning up on tracks by Travis Scott, Vince Staples, and Lizzo, among others. Between his myriad collaborations and side groups (which include his partnership with The National's Aaron Dessner as Big Red Machine), Bon Iver albums tend to appear only every five years or so. But each one is a major event, signaling a radical change in approach. On 2011's Grammy Award–winning self-titled effort, Vernon's wounded balladry acquired a dreamy, soft-focus splendor, and 2016's 22, A Million recast that velvet-smooth voice against a mutating backdrop of burbling electronics and fractured beats.

    Eyes that change

    by MD on 1/3/24

Personally, it was an experience that couldn’t have been more rewarding in terms of the love it takes to make music. I’ve seen Bon Iver twice, and I cherish those moments when Justin shows himself at different dynamics. True performance, passion, and an experience that is pushing me to be a better musician. I hope, when it comes the time to choose, that we all have the vulnerability to listen. Thankful there is time to see more of the breakdown in their music, so maybe I can create more naturally. Much love.

    It was different

    by dancer120 on 8/19/23

I grew up loving Bon Iver. I loved the chillness. The concert was not what we were expecting. At one point it sounded very demonic and people were leaving. It was a weird vibe.

    Couldn't see a thing

    by Lojo on 8/17/23

The venue was emphatic about bringing chairs no more than 3 inches off the ground, but then they let people stand in front of us. What's the point? I had a wall of people standing in front of me, never saw the band.

    It was fun

    by AbbeyG on 8/14/23

It was a fun evening. The weather was really nice once the sun started to go down. Got there late bc I was flying back from a work trip, so our spot wasn’t the greatest. We were situated behind the sound tent, so the sound tent blocked most of our view of the stage, and then there was a tree that blocked our view, too. I wish Idaho Botanical Garden would consider side stage screens, because it’s always more fun when you can see the band performing, too. Bon Iver’s merchandise was disappointing, so I didn’t buy anything. No tour t-shirts. Definitely get to the Botanical Gardens early if you want a guaranteed good, unobstructed view of the stage.

    Overcrowded

    by Taylor on 8/14/23

The first hour of the evening was borderline miserable due to the venue being overcrowded, lack of sufficient shade, and the sound for the opening band was jarringly loud. Things improved greatly once the sun got lower and the headliner took the stage. We came close to leaving, but I’m glad we didn’t.

    Good but Not Great

    by Jake D on 8/14/23

I was very excited to have the chance to see Bon Iver, for we believe his first time in Idaho. His music was the obvious highlight of the night, however it seemed as though he cut it quite short. He played until about 9:15-9:20 then encored two more standard songs. The sound booth/tent put up heat blankets for them or the equipment which partially blocked our view until the sun went down. I love this venue, but their management is dropping the ball in communication & execution. They encourage Uber but then made the Uber drop us off 3 blocks away. Then, as we left from the best spot you could ever ask for, they hold the cars for “majority” of the pedestrians and force vehicles to exit their way. Maybe my expectations were too high, but cumulatively it was a let down for the amazing possibilities. Better luck next time I guess…

    Glitchy and loud

    by Caracudas on 8/14/23

This was the worst show I have ever been to. The sound was a loud ringing and vibrating. The electronics were glitchy and unnerving. I couldn’t figure out if the sound was bad or the music was supposed to sound like that. I left early.

    Classic Bon Iver

by Clairhamilton on 6/27/22Ascend Amphitheater - Nashville

The show was amazing. Justin Vernon is so talented. We saw them play the Ryman a few years ago. I love how he reinterprets the music. I usually hate live shows for that very reason. But when he does it, it’s just so powerful and impressive. I knew what to expect having seen them before. But wow. Thanks for all your hard work. We appreciate it!!
