Cirque du Soleil: Corteo on Tour

Like the deceased clown whose festive fantasy funeral it portrays, Corteo has risen again to assume its joyful place in the Cirque du Soleil solar system.

One of some 20 active Cirque du Soleil shows, Corteo closed its "Grand Chapiteau" – or "big tent" – run in Quito, Ecuador, in December 2015 after more than 3,500 performances seen by more than 5 million people since its Montreal premiere a decade earlier. In 2018, Corteo reopened in New Orleans as an even bigger and better arena experience slated for a two-year tour.

If you love clowns, Corteo is the show for you. Taking its title from the Italian word for "cortège," or procession, Corteo offers a parade of brilliant entertainments in a carnivalesque atmosphere. It was inspired originally by "The Grand Parade: Portrait of the Artist as Clown," a 2004 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada.

That exhibition's vast array of circus life, from 18th-century fairgrounds to Picasso's harlequins, was transformed into an in-the-round big-top experience by director Daniele Finzi Pasca. Pasca founded the Swiss clown troupe Teatro Sunil and directed several other Cirque du Soleil spectacles.

While all of the show's principal characters are clowns – including the Dead Clown, Clowness, Giant Clown, and Little Clown – the 62-member cast, from more than a dozen countries, also features aerialists, acrobats, musicians, jugglers, contortionists, hoopers, and gymnasts in addition to its many jubilant jesters.

Costume designer Dominique Lemieux was inspired by "raw and luxurious" European fabrics from the early 20th century and commedia dell'arte characters from the 16th to the 18th centuries. A labyrinth matching one on the floor of France's famed Chartres Cathedral graces the stage. And French painter Adolphe Willette's fantasy Parisian bohemian scene Parc Domine (1885) inspired the show's elaborate water-colored curtains. Those curtains hide "Patience," an imposing overhead structure holding up the rails traversed by four platform carts.

Its stunning mixture of acrobatics and character-driven acting has been Cirque du Soleil's calling card since 1984, when what is now the world's largest theatrical production was founded in Montreal by street performers Guy Laliberté and Gilles Ste-Croix. With Corteo, Cirque du Soleil has outdone itself with an epic tribute to the circus world's comical essence: the clown.

Not at good as I am used to from Cirque

by Rorshack on 4/15/24Total Mortgage Arena - Bridgeport

Having seen 5 separate Cirque shows I have to say this was my least favorite. The venue was way too small for the acts presented. They were crammed onto a smaller stage than they were used to performing on. I don't go to a Cirque show to see...Juggling. If there is Juggling at a Cirque show I expect the performers not to drop any clubs. The acts that did not need to use larger spaces were fine but overall the show was lacking. Also, Having my front-row seats exchanged for other seats due to some logistical issue on Cirque's part ruined the entire experience. I specifically chose the front row to avoid leaning around the person seated in front of me. Cirque's offered compensation? a Program. I was insulted. Your inability to sell enough tickets to fill two sides of the venue is not my problem. It will be a long time before I risk wasting money on exchanged seats for Cirque du Soleil or any show in the Bridgeport venue ever again.

    Big Deal

by CustomerConfidential on 4/11/24Upstate Medical University Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial - Syracuse

Some people jump on trampolines. One person climbs a ladder. Two guys harnessed to pole platforms swing and toss petite acrobats back and forth. There was a large person who would groan. The ticket was expensive. It wasn't worth the money. I've seen La Nouba, Kooza, Saltimbanco, Algeria, Humanity, Love, Wintuk, Ka, the one based on Shakespeare's The Tempest Amaluna, and now Corteo. I wish I used all the money it cost to buy a Corteo ticket on dog food for my sweet little doggies.

    Corteo

by Brian on 4/11/24Upstate Medical University Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial - Syracuse

The Cirque De Solie Corteo performance was absolutely magical and I would go to see it again, just not at the oncenter in syracuse. The seats and barriers made the experience very uncomfortable and the food and drink were way over priced.

    Terrible seats for price

by Dawn on 4/10/24Upstate Medical University Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial - Syracuse

From the moment we walked in I had my ticket Master app opened with tickets and they couldn't scan them, said it was screenshot so we had to download Google wallet then add each ticket individually to scan. That made us late to.our seats and missed first 10 minutes of show. Then when we got to our seats in the dark it was at the end of the row behind the curtain so we had limited view of the show the whole time. I picked our seats in the first section next to stairs, not stage left behind curtain. These were not the seats I paid extra for. This was my daughter and husband's first Cirque du Soleil show and they couldn't get the full idea of the story. I really think our experience would have been more enjoyable if we were 10 seats over where I initially bought our seats. And having paperless tickets really made the experience from the beginning disappointing, really they should have been able to be scanned from Ticketmaster app. I was hoping for the money I paid to have first level seats we could have enjoyed the show, I'd rather have saved my $400.

    Great show.

by Chic on 4/10/24Upstate Medical University Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial - Syracuse

This was a great show. The physical ability of the performers is astounding. The costumes, lighting and music all blend together very well. I was amazed at how quickly they could change the sets and rigging. Everyone should see one of these shows and bring a friend along to share the experience with.

The whole evening was pure magic.

by Kaila on 4/10/24Upstate Medical University Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial - Syracuse

It will remind you of all the reasons you love live theater. The lights, the music, the costumes, the incredible performances, all right in front of you, in the same room, it's like the auditorium was taken over by an alluring spell and we were all part of it.

    Magical once inside…getting inside, awful

by T Bix on 4/9/24Upstate Medical University Arena at The Oncenter War Memorial - Syracuse

Cirque never disappoints!!! Parking, signage, traffic, directions or anyone even directing traffic were all sub par if not missing all together. Once inside the seating area it was dark and you hoped you were sitting in the correct area or in the correct seats. We were but others were in our seats and didnt know where to go and we couldn’t direct since we had no idea either and the show had started so we just all crammed in and one sat on the floor until intermission so as to not interrupt all those around us. No signs for the parking and charged $15 but could have been a homeless person since no signs or uniform present on, in, or around the parking garage. I wouldnt recommend that venue to anyone but would highly recommend the show! Great lighting, amazing performances, breath taking stunts! Great blend and mix of magic and technology.
