University of Colorado Buffaloes Football History

The University of Colorado football program launched in Boulder, Colorado in 1890, and in the Buffaloes’ 130-plus-year history, the team has earned 27 Conference titles, won one National Championship and made 30 bowl game appearances. The Buffaloes experienced success early under head coach Fred Folsom, who led the team to ten Conference titles over his 15-year career. The team faced stronger competition after joining what would become the Big Eight Conference in 1948.

Under head coach Bill McCartney, the Buffaloes surged to the top of the Big Eight, landing between first and second place for six straight seasons from 1989 to 1994. During that run, Colorado finished three seasons with an 11-1 record and won three bowl games. In the team’s 1990 centennial season, the Buffaloes won their first national championship. The Buffaloes also hosted their first Heisman Trophy winner when running back Rashaan Salaam was awarded the prestigious honor in 1994.

After the Big Eight Conference was expanded to the Big 12, the Buffaloes earned one more Conference title in 2001. The team moved to the Pac-12 Conference for the 2011 season and won one division title in 2016. In 2022, Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders was hired as the Buffaloes’ new head coach, ushering in a new era under “Coach Prime.” The Buffaloes are set to rejoin the Big 12 Conference in 2024.

University of Colorado Buffaloes Football at Folsom Field

Folsom Field has hosted the Colorado Buffaloes since 1924. It was initially known as Colorado Stadium but renamed in 1944 to honor Colorado’s late head coach Fred Folsom. As one of the NCAA’s highest-altitude stadiums, Folsom Field offers one of the most unique game day experiences. Through its century-long existence, the 50,183-seat facility has undergone numerous expansions and renovations, most recently in 2016. Many traditions have persisted, like the “Ralphie Run” where the titular live bison mascot charges across the field during home games. In 2005, Buffs fans set Folsom Field’s football attendance record at 54,972 during a “Rocky Mountain Showdown” rivalry game against the Colorado State Rams.

Parking and traffic was horrible I go to bronco games, and they should handle this so much better. Why don't they hire more police.
