A Silk Purse Despite The Sow's Ear

by playmeafiddle on 7/30/13Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

Since Stravinski is a sow's ear to me, it's amazing what the LA Phil managed to do with it. But I really went for violin, and it was impeccable. I do believe he played every single note, not merely correctly, but as if it were indispensible.

    Bowl Sound System Suffering

by MrBowl on 7/28/13Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

I love going to the Bowl and this night was no exception. We had a great time and the Phil played great, but the speakers and sound design of the show was unfortunately bad. There were trumpet solos and quiet moments of the piece that were completely inaudible. Rite of Spring is supposed to be exciting.. but the sound of popping champagne bottles and crackling chip bags were louder than the most impactful moments of the piece. For a venue so prestigious, with so much money, and in a major market city, there should never be any issue of less than perfect production value of such an easy concert. Disclaimer is that the leasing events (such as Wilco and Florence and the Machine, etc) sound much better than when they try to mic the Phil. The Hollywood Bowl is a MUST for anyone in Los Angeles, but if you want to hear the orchestra wait until they're back at Disney.

Rite of spring better than Tchaikowski.

by ItalianMelomane on 7/26/13Hollywood Bowl - Hollywood

the violinist was a great virtuoso, but maybe with a little heart and laking originality of interpretation. The orchestra did not perfectly harmonized with the soloist, but this is a limit at the Hollywood Bowl. However, the whole experience was wonderful thanks to the unique atmosphere of the HB. The rite of spring was an excellent interpretation, the sound was much better. the helicopters, unfortunately, really disturbed some passages

    The Rite of Spring

by DrMazz on 6/3/13Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

The Virginia Symphony and the Richmond Ballet produced what may be the most extraordinary theatrical event I have ever seen--and I've seen more than a few! My wife and I were impressed more than I can say.

    amazing centenarian

by musicanddancefan on 5/31/13Chrysler Hall - Norfolk

A remarkable endeavor from an outstanding dance group and orchestra in one of the major works of the 20th century. The genesis of modern dance and modern orchestration still has power, meaning and moves art forward ten decades after its initial presentation. One can only imagine what the dancers, musicians as well as the audience thought of this work at the time. Before WWI, globalization and communication when art was ensconced in the territory it was born. Today, we take for granted the universality of this work and understand its meaning all due to the forward movement of the art. Even with a diminshed orchestra due to the space of the pit, the music flourished below while the dancers soared about. Modern dance is visceral compared to traditional ballet and the Richmond troupe showed their versatility and range as they mesmerized and drove the point of the music in a visual display of greatness. Kudos to all for this fabulous experience.

I went because I had never seen this ballet and I felt it was something I "needed to do", even though I do not care for Stravinsky music in general. I was overwhelmed! The dancers were out of this world! The precision, the athleticism - outstanding! Truly an evening to remember.
