    Ugh...

by semienthused on 2/14/11Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

You should be a big Onion fan to really enjoy this event. They were funny, but for $30+ per ticket? It could have been way better considering they took in a lot of $$ for such simple narrated powerpoint presentation.

    So what

by LuckyLady1234 on 2/13/11Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

I had a naive hope that the editors would come prepared to talk about the Onion process, perhaps let us in on a little of behind the scenes operations. Sadly, they seem to have told NPR everything interesting and had nothing left to share with the audience. The two Onion staffers seemed off the cuff to the point of being unprepared. Most of the evening was showing stories that, if you are a regular Onion reader, you would have already seen. The second half was taking questions, which at least forced the Onion editors to think about their response. I was very disappointed.

The Onion Editors at Royce Hall on UCLA campus

by ndconcerts on 2/13/11Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Having been a big-time fan of The Onion satirical newspaper and collector of their works for years, I found the live presentation really lacking. It consisted of a slide show featuring various headlines with the two editors making mostly descriptive and dull comments, not really giving any insight into what drove their creativity or passion. Mostly they just read aloud from the text onscreen. There were a few clever video clips, but these can be found on YouTube. It felt more like a 'powerpoint' presentation than a ticketed event, with seat prices around the $60 mark. I'm really torn about this show--I expected more, obviously, but I can't say it was a worthless endeavor. These guys rarely if ever venture out into the public, so I guess it was nice that they did this at all but I did feel like it wasn't really well-organized at all; the pacing was haphazard at best. Also, giving away copies of "The Onion Headlines" book to random audience members doesn't have the same effect a post-show meet-n-greet would have. I guess what I'm saying is that if you're an Onion fan and something akin to what I saw came to your town, you may want to exercise caution, especially if the tickets were pricey for a mere 90 minute show. On the other hand, if they do more shows, they may improve their format. I want to be clear--I knew it wasn't going to be a live version of their great YouTube clips. But it could have been so much more than a pedestrian "read-along" with a Q & A at the end.

The Onion - a bit stale but still good for us.

by keew on 2/12/11Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

To be fair I don't know what I expected, but then it seemed you guys didn't either. Was this the first time on stage? Of course the material is SO GOOD, every single day, you can get away with very little for the ticket price -because we love you. To show that you appreciate our devotion, please don't make others sit through the Q&A about how dorky WMC guys from Wisconsin (or was that Minnesota) make the Onion happen. That is so prima facie not going to be interesting! For a Royce audience to politely sit through that Q&A is a VERY impressive testament to the Onion, however it is served. It was wonderful to share in the laughter with other sensitive, perceptive, and terrified folks. That is all you've got to do - show the old stories and headlines, they deserve to be enjoyed more than once.

Junior High Book Report Quality from The Onion?

by Beachmolly on 2/12/11Royce Hall - UCLA Live - Los Angeles

Did anyone at the Onion sit through this "show". Flat jokes, excessive profanity, and people around us were falling asleep it was so boring! I can't believe I wasted $60. to sit through their rambling. The pieces of the articles flashed on the screen looked hilarious, but these guys just read the headlines and rushed through it. If you're going to charge for an informative evening of comedy writing, it might pay to rehearse and punch it up.

Wasn't exactly what I was expecting -- anyone who reads the paper with regularity had already read those stories -- hoping for something a bit more...
