The concept of a doing a Go-Go musical of the Wiz was Amazing! However, on so many levels this was a fail. For starters, although there were actors and music, this was not a stage play or even a musical for that matter. Visually it lacked luster, and there was not one stage set for any of the scenes, aside from the model of the big chair, which was positioned horribly. A lot of the dialogue seemed to be ad lib, and there were several scenes that had nothing to do with the remake of the Wiz, story line. In a way, it felt like a high school play. Kudo to the MGM who got people in quick & easy. And yet, still it started a complete hour late! And it didn't help that the promoter told the audience they wasn't gonna start until everyone had entered the theatre and was seated. (What's the point of coming on time then?) As for the GO-GO MUSIC... they did rep that well! But it felt more like being inside a Go-Go nightclub than a theatre production. Sadly tho, that's not why a lot of people purchased tickets. In my seating section, half of the audience left at the 3 1/2 hour mark. At the 4 hour mark hundreds more was headed out too-- and the GIZ hadn't even come on stage yet. Even cast mbrs complained the next day of how long it lasted. What could have been phenomenal, was nothing more than a Hype Go-Go listening party. I love Go-Go! But it failed to live up to it's expectation.
