Tampa Bay Lightning History

The Tampa Bay Lightning joined the league as an expansion team (along with the Ottawa Senators) in 1992, and earned their first berth in the Playoffs in the 1995-1996 season. The Bolts began to achieve consistent success in 2002-2003; the key ingredient was 1998 first-round draft pick Vincent Lecavalier, a center who went on to play 14 seasons for the Lightning and set almost every team scoring record.

After making the second round in the 2002-2003 Playoffs, the Bolts rocketed to the Stanley Cup Final the following season behind the league's scoring leader, Martin St. Louis, the goaltending of Nikolai Khabibulin, and the efforts of Lecavalier, Brad Richards, Fredrik Modin, Ruslan Fedotenko, Cory Stillman, and captain Dave Andreychuk. The Lightning defeated the Calgary Flames in a Stanley Cup Final that included four games decided by one goal, two of which came in overtime. Fedotenko scored both goals in the clinching 2-1 victory in Game 7.

The Lightning flirted with Playoff success the next two seasons, but struggled for three years after that. After bringing in Hall of Famer Steve Yzerman as general manager, the team returned to the Playoffs in 2010-2011, 2013-2014, and again the following season, when the Bolts — boasting the highest-scoring offense in the league — won 50 games, and the Eastern Conference title. They dispatched the Detroit Red Wings, Montreal Canadiens, and New York Rangers in a hard-fought series en route to the Stanley Cup Final, where they ultimately lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in six games.

Powered by the scoring of Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Lightning contended again in 2015-2016, only to be turned away in the conference finals by the eventual winner of the Stanley Cup Championship, the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Lightning subsequently went on to win back-to-back titles, taking home the Stanley Cup Championship in 2020 and 2021, becoming the first-ever team to win two Stanley Cup Championships within one year. The Lightning appeared in the championship again in 2022, but lost to the Colorado Avalanche in Game 6.

Never again sitting in 300 section

by Nat on 1/14/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

It gave me so much anxiety! Especially being pregnant. I never realized how steep it is up high as someone that’s always in the 100-200 level. Wishing tickets were more affordable for lower levels to be able to attend more games.

    Amalie Arena Tampa Bay Lightning

    by muskokagirl13 on 1/3/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

We recently attended two Home Games at Amalie Arena over the Christmas Break. One right behind the Lightning Bench and the other behind Vasilevskiy in net 1st and 3rd Periods. Even though we lost both games, the entire event was exceptional each time. From Thunder Alley pregame fun, to the food and shops inside Amalie, to the seats themselves and fan experiences throughout the evening, Lightning games are ALWAYS the highlight of our extended stay in the Tampa area. Expect to spend longer than planned before and after the game. There is so much to do not just in Thunder Alley, but also in the Channelside/Water St./Riverwalk area.

    Awesome game!

by Jamest on 1/3/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

The energy was literally electric. The intro, lights and presentation were amazing. The game was tight and the crowd was on fire. It was the best sporting events I have ever been to. My son got a puck from a guy who worked for the team. Overall it was an event my 6 yr old will not soon forget.

    Great experience

    by Raised4Rangers on 1/2/24Amalie Arena - Tampa

Great experience at the Lightning Rangers game. The environment was so much fun. Easy to find parking and get in & out of the arena. Fans were competitive but friendly even to those of us rooting for the visiting team

Great team on and of the ice

by Lou Pepe on 12/31/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

We are fans of the Bolts, our second adopted team after the Flyers. We would have loved to see the Bolts win but they had some tough competition from the Panthers. However, if we ignore the final score, it was still a great evening. We traveled 200 miles to see our favorite Florida team play live. We attended a concert 10 months ago and were impressed by the Amalie Arena staff. The representatives of VSG are outstanding. They are friendly, efficient, and focused on the best experience for attendees. Can't say enough about how great the experience was (except for the final score). The venue is clean, food vendors have good stuff at a reasonable 2023 arena price. We had no problems entering or exiting the arena. Very nice evening aided by some dedicated staff. Thank you!

    Great

by Sonia on 12/30/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

Biergaten was a big upside. Can’t have that in Canada! The 300 sections were well designed and every seat had a great vision on the game. The side of the scoreboard felt too zoomed in and the quality of the image was affected. The image was partial. Penalties were badly identified on the board as well. Ambiance inside and outside the arena was awesome.

    Awesome Amalie !

by Cab on 12/30/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

Love our Lightning team! We were in club 7 this game against the Panthers, and it was pretty nice. The food was excellent, but the drink I wanted they could not make and I was very disappointed! So they apparently can't have any Kailua or creams of any kind, so I had to settle for a screw driver! Not what I call all inclusive if you can't get a drink that you want! Paid alot of money as usual. Everything else was awesome, except we lost the game and alot of it was probably because the referees missed and didn't make several calls against the Panthers! Not cool reffs, your not gaining any points with the fans! Bolts played hard but not tough enough and not enough defense!! Would love to see them go to the finals, but guess we'll see! Go Bolts!!! ⚡️

    Lightning games are always fun!

by Hockey Coach Wife on 12/24/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

Great seats in the lower bowl vs the Vegas Knights. Couldn’t ask for a better game….5-4 win for the Bolts, fights, awesome hockey, and Christmas games on the Jumbotron! Can’t wait to go next year!

    Great Time

by VGK Fan on 12/24/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

Seats were amazing. Had a great time, with the exception of the obnoxious Bolts fans across the isle loudly calling my team losers for pretty much the whole game.

    Best game ever!!!

by TB Lightning on 12/24/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

Amelie Arena is a great venue for concerts and in this case hockey games! Tampa Bay Lightning won the game over Vegas and it was a very exciting game. We sat in the Club area, not Club seats but a very nice area with your own restaurants, restrooms, and rooftop lounge. No smoking inside the stadium even in the outdoor lounges, so that is nice too. A family oriented experience with well behaved fans. Nice people working and volunteering here. Organized entry and exiting. Parking was prepaid in the green lot which is right across the street, couldn't be easier. Very stimulating environment, most of the flashing lights didn't bother me at all. Police presence everywhere making for a safe feeling here in Downtown Tampa. Refreshments are "pricey"but to be expected. $27 dollars for a diet pepsi bottle, a pretzel, and a giant bag of popcorn. Go if you can to a game, you will have fun!!!

Incredible first hockey game experience for my husband! We moved (back) from dallas and he was blown away by his first lightning game (as I expected)! The players are amazing, the hype team and thunder bug are unmatched- the Vinnick family knows how to treat everyone and you can see it from the ground up! Round of applause to them for creating a magical experience for people of all ages - thank you!

    Fans dancing over replays?

by The Peds on 12/9/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

The arena has a beautiful scoreboard screen to show replays of important calls including ones being challenged. Yet during the challenge true hockey fans see are forced to view people in the stands dancing instead of the replay on the scoreboard screen. We weren’t sure if we were at a hockey game or a dance event.

A bit expensive but nice venue and good game

by Steve on 12/7/23Amalie Arena - Tampa

Had a good time, arena being downtown was intimidating, but actually wasn’t horrible. Ticket prices seemed a bit higher than I remember.
