About

Sweeney Todd has taken a slice out of Broadway audiences across four productions since its Tony-winning debut in 1979. The musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by Hugh Wheeler, centers on the titular Demon Barber of Fleet Street, a character introduced in 19th-century fiction and later reimagined in a 1970 stage play, and his ruthless tale of revenge in 1840s London. The original Broadway run garnered eight Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, and its 2023 Broadway revival at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, starring Josh Groban as Todd and Annaleigh Ashford as his meat pie-making accomplice Mrs. Lovett, added to the show’s legacy haul with two wins and eight total nominations at the 2023 ceremony. In 2024, Tony Award® winners Aaron Tveit and Sutton Foster will assume the two lead roles of Todd and Lovett for the ongoing Broadway production.
