    A Touching Comedy

by cc on 6/4/23Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

Polished and hilarious, this play wanders from stand-up to math to homophones while telling a deeply personal story. It starts a conversation that is never intended to be finished and transcends traditional comedy performance. Should not be missed.

    go see this show!

    by Carolee on 6/1/23

Michael Cruz Kayne is such a powerful storyteller. This show mines the depths of grief but somehow also leaves you feeling lighter. One of the best theatrical experiences I've had in decades. I had no idea what I was walking into and walked out feeling a bit changed. You really don't want to miss this one.

    one of a kind show

    by Carolee on 6/1/23

I'm not sure what I was expecting but this show exceeded it in droves. It was a truly unique and powerful night of storytelling. I haven't felt so moved by a piece of theatre in decades. The story was personal but the lesson was universal. I really can't recommend it more. I laughed so much and oh wow did I cry! Do yourself a favor and go see it!

    Definitely Recommend

by Brooklyn Grief Therapist on 5/30/23Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I went into the show feeling a bit reserved. I worried about a comedy about parental grief. Instead, I found the show embracing grief with a sweet compassion while making jokes about our cultural unease and confusion about death and grief. I know a lot about grief - as a person hit by grief as a child and an adult- as a bereavement researcher and as a grief and trauma therapist. I usually leave professional trainings on grief a bit underwhelmed. This show, however, offers new insight into the experience of grief and the . difficulty we have dealing with it. Thank you Michael Cruz Kayne for the courage to share your story and your on-point work to change how we acknowledge and talk about grief.

    A Different Experience

by Ken on 5/26/23Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

I had heard the playwright interviewed on NPR so I knew the genesis of the piece. What I found amazing was how he is able to keep it personal without allowing it to be overcome with grief. This is the ultimate example of making lemonade out of lemons.

    A Bit Disappointing

by K. L. on 5/25/23Minetta Lane Theatre - New York

There's no denying the real loss and grief Michael Cruz Kayne feels, talks, and jokes about in "Sorry for Your Loss." But I felt something missing in his overall attempt to evoke the universal experience using the death of his 34 day-old twin baby in the early 2000s. The humor is there; and the chalkboard demonstrations of things "not being what they seem" are clever. The stagecraft and lighting are impressive. But simply that. The 75 minute show falls short in evoking the shared bond of that human experience. I left feeling I'd witnessed Mr. Kayne use his considerable talent to evoke his own experience. But my personal weight of grief and loss was untouched and unmoved.
