It is only the shortsightedness of NJPAC that is the sole negative factor in the recent brilliant reincarnation of Sophisticated Ladies; a production that ended after only five performances on March 24, 2019. The cast gave a new, rousing and explosive rendition of a musical that was last seen on Broadway in 1981. Audiences were blown out of their seats by the superb delivery of the Duke Ellington canon, under the creative direction of Andre De Shields, who is also opening on Broadway in Hadestown. That he was actually able to do double duty on both projects is a testament to his skill and acumen. Crossroads Theatre, which has distinguished itself for decades, pulled off another significant affirmation of what American owes to the genius of African-Americans to musical theatre, jazz and art. Unfortunately, the myopic bean counters at NJPAC, who were the "co-producers", deprived more audiences of this special gift that fell into their laps. Bravo to Sophisticated Ladies, but as Duke might have said it: "You got it bad from NJPAC, and that ain't good."
Thoroughly enjoyed. Singing & dancing super. Tremendous energy, whole cast seemed to be having the time of their life. They gave everything they had! Coustomes & set well done. Comfortable theatre, easy access, & helpful staff.
Had everything I love in one performance. On stage band, tap dancing, strong vocals, sophisticated wardrobe, Duke Ellingtonâs music, and all exemplifying the spirit of the 20âs with lots of AT-TI-TUDE. Everyone was Fabulous! Ken Ard, just outstanding đ
Unfortunately the first half was overmiked so most of the vocals came across as screechy.Second half was much better not overmiked and you could really appreciate the beauty of the singersâ voices. Tap dancing was great.
We really enjoyed the show. The talent was great! We longed for the days of long ago with Duke Ellington and Etta James and the like. But it was a great time. Our seats were upgraded. Next time, I'll probably decline the upgrade because the seats were uncomfortable for a tall person. Other than that, we look forward to more shows featuring the Crossroads Theater Group.
