About

Shawn Colvin in Concert

Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first GRAMMY Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut album, Steady On in 1989. She has been a mainstay of the contemporary folk music scene ever since, releasing eleven superlative albums and establishing herself as one of America’s greatest live performers. She triumphed at the 1998 GRAMMY Awards, winning both Record and Song of the Year for “Sunny Came Home.” Her inspiring and candid memoir, Diamond In The Rough, which chronicles her struggles with depression and eating disorders, was published to strong reviews in 2012. With the wit, lyricism, and empathy that have characterized Shawn’s performances and inspired audiences worldwide, Diamond in the Rough looks back over a rich lifetime of highs and lows with stunning insight and candor.

Shawn’s most recent solo endeavor, Uncovered (Fantasy Records, 2015), is the long-awaited follow up to fan-favorite Cover Girl. Uncovered's twelve tunes include masterful interpretations of songs by Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Tom Waits, Stevie Wonder, Robbie Robertson and Graham Nash to name a few, but in their selection and delivery, they are pure Shawn Colvin.

In June 2016, Shawn Colvin and Steve Earle united to release, Colvin & Earle, their acclaimed self-titled duo album (Fantasy Records). Produced by Buddy Miller (Patty Griffin, Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams) the album features guitarist Richard Bennett (Neil Diamond, Mark Knopfler), drummer Fred Eltringham (Willie Nelson, Kacey Musgraves), and bassist Chris Wood (of Medeski Martin & Wood). Fueled by their longtime friendship, Colvin & Earle beautifully captures the pair’s extraordinary chemistry and is a true standout in careers already filled with pinnacles and masterpieces. The album received high praise from critics – NPR asserted that the duo “Elevated their collaboration to the level of top-flight album-making, bringing seemingly opposing impulses to the process.”

Shawn’s longtime career achievements were recognized when she was recently bestowed with the Lifetime Achievement Trailblazer Award at this year’s Americana Honors & Awards Show, held at Nashville’s famous Ryman Auditorium on September 21st, 2016. Presenting Colvin with this prestigious award was Bonnie Raitt. Of Shawn, Raitt said “She’s simply one of the best singers I’ve ever heard— and a truly gifted and deep songwriter and guitarist… She was groundbreaking when she emerged and continues to inspire me and the legions of fans and other singer/songwriters coming up in her wake”

    This was a delight!

by shelley on 3/7/23State Theatre - Portland

I've been a fan of all three artists who performed at this concert for many years. They were so generous to each other and to the audience. It was a fantastic concert and my husband and I are so so glad that we went. Loved the format, loved the singing and the instrumentation. There was a wonderful two way love stream between the audience and the musicians. It is always joyful when it happens like that- it feels like there is an intimacy that doesn't often happen.

    Lovely acoustic concert.

by Darryl on 3/6/23State Theatre - Portland

The combination of the three musicians blended perfectly together making this a unique and very enjoyable acoustic concert. A treat not to be needing ear plugs at the state theater.

    Awesome

She was amazing! And the sound was great! Her voice, her guitar playing, the stories she told, all awesome. Had a great night.

    Disappointed

by Music All The Time on 3/6/23State Theatre - Portland

I was looking forward to this event as it was my first live show since COVID. I was surprised by the low energy level of the performers. Having 3 people together, I was hoping there would be energy of a jam session and energy between each other. But, I felt the show was more like an NPR Prairie Home Companion show with too much talking and too mellow. After the first hour, they played 6 songs (2 each) and that must have lasted a max of 30-40 minutes. Maybe they were just tired from 2 months of touring and this Portland, ME concert was their second to last show for their tour.

    Three wonderful performers

by Maliceah on 3/6/23State Theatre - Portland

It was nice that they were all together on stage, but I would’ve liked to have heard more from Shawn & Mark. I get that they were featuring Sarah, as she is the next generation, but it was a little disappointing. I left early.

Still got it; still giving it.

by At large on 3/5/23The Wilbur - Boston

The opportunity to see three of my favorite singer songwriters on one stage admiring and supporting each other in every way was inspiring. It is encouraging to see these talents continuing to create and perform. I had no idea that Sarah Jarosz was such an accomplished guitar player. The harmonies were beautiful. A fine evening.

    Wonderful way to present music

by Cyrano on 3/5/23The Wilbur - Boston

This was a fantastic concert. I loved the concept of having the three musicians perform together, rather than having a backup band and a lead performer. Shawn Colvin was excellent, as she always is. Marc Cohn I had seen previously, but in fact as a backup to a lead performer, and he was much more comfortable and engaging in this setting. Sarah Jarosz was new to me, and she is an outstanding talent. I enjoyed the solo work of the three performers, and their work together as well. The two hours flew by and I only wished that the concert had been longer.

    Overall a good concert

by Nafis on 3/5/23The Wilbur - Boston

All three singers reinforced and supported each other which was heartening to see. Sarah Jarosz was very good. Although the background stories were good but there were too many stories and a little less singing throughout the night. A little tweak is needed.

    A bit underwhelming

    by kate48 on 2/22/23Warner Theatre - Washington

SO excited t o see Shawn Colvin. Loved her fun and soulful music for years. We did not get to hear many of her wonderful songs. She seemed to lack the the spunk and wit of the past. Marc Cohen seemed sad and uncomfortable. Sarah was very good...beautiful voice and seemed to be enjoying herself. I guess, one out of three isn't bad!! It made me a not sad to see such amazing talents seem tired and sad.
