San Jose Sharks History

The California Golden Seals played at the Oakland Coliseum from 1967–1976 before relocating to Cleveland. While a failure at the box office and on the ice, the Seals sowed the seeds for the Sharks' arrival some 15 years later. With Wayne Gretzky's trade to Los Angeles in 1988, hockey fever spread across non-traditional markets, and San Jose was among the first cities into which the league ventured.

The Sharks initially played at the Cow Palace in Daly City in 1991 before moving into their current home, the SAP Center, in 1993. The new digs agreed with the team, as they experienced an NHL record 58-point increase over the prior season. Early stars such as Sergei Makarov, Pat Falloon and the Latvian duo of Sandis Ozoliņš and Artūrs Irbe gave the Sharks an early level of respectability.

Gaining a reputation as giant-killers, the upstart Sharks dispatched the heavily favored Detroit Red Wings in the 1994 Western Conference Finals and the Presidents' Trophy-winning St. Louis Blues in 2000. The Sharks continued to flirt with success for the next decade, riding the talents of such star players as Owen Nolan, Marco Sturm, Evgeni Nabokov, Patrick Marleau, and Joe Thornton.

The Sharks went on to win the Presidents' Trophy again in 2009, and have captured a total of six Pacific Division titles and appeared in the Western Conference Finals four times.

San Jose Sharks at SAP Center

The San Jose Sharks have made the SAP Center in San Jose their home since 1993. The "Shark Tank," as it is affectionately known, is one of the most raucous buildings in the league. In 2006, the SAP Center, which also hosts concert events year-round in addition to hockey, sold 633,435 tickets to non-sporting events — the most out of any venue in the Western United States and fourth-highest in the world.

Impossible to acceed to my bar code

by Lionel on 3/3/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The experience was great overall but on my second game against New Jersey, it was impossible to acceed to my bar code. I finally needed to talk to a San José sharks worker and they submitted me a pass for the game. Hopefully we were in advance at the game and could use part of our time to find a solution to this problem.

    Good except for the food.

by Pablo on 3/1/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

It was a great experience except for some of the prices of the food and the fact that the food I tried was less than warm or cold. Definitely loved the hockey game, but for the price of the food was not worth eating there.

    sharks game

by Candice on 2/27/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

I have not been to a sharks game in a few years. I had so much fun. The arena was clean, helpful ushers everywhere, parking was great but the only thing was water was 6.19 a bottle. Loved the crowd ne one was rude. Seats were great.

    Thanks SJ Sharkie!

by Mil on 2/22/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The game itself wasn’t very good, BUT I had arranged (paid for) for Sharkie to meet my 6 year old grandson and that was a WONDERFUL experience for him. Many thanks to the Sharks organization for offering an opportunity to have Sharkie make a personal visit to his fans!

    The Sharks Suck

by Shark Snark on 2/22/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Until the Sharks start playing aggressively again, I will not buy tickets again.

The last second loss was a bummer but overall, my friend and I had a great time!

Didn't like the Pride Theme at all...

by Cat girl on 1/31/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

I really enjoyed the game, I had a great time, great experience there, however the Pride Theme was a bit too much.. Did not care for it at all.... Please don't do the Pride Theme again, very disbursing to see that many colors at a hockey game.

by Carnicmom on 1/26/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Just saw the SJ Sharks hockey game at the SAP center this past week. Haven’t been to a game since before Covid hit. Was super impressed with the whole experience from tickets, food, parking, venue etc…was a bit hard getting out of venue.. lots of crowds but overall very pleased. A must see!

    OK Arena, ridiculous food prices

$32.00 for 2 pizza slices and a pop???? You need a 2nd Mortgage to go to a game there....

    3 stars

by Sharkfan23 on 1/9/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

The tickets were quite expensive for not very the best seats. We were sitting at the very top, not by choice. Plus, the person I went with and I keep getting kicked in the head by a group of 6 year old boys who were very rowdy, which made our overall experience not that good. Hopefully next time it will be better.

    Great venue

by Hikermand on 1/6/24SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Very nice venue and staff. Food prices are pretty high, but good quality. Sharkie was fun.

    Better fare for the masses

by OneTimer on 12/31/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Overall it’s a grand experience though the faithful Sharks fans deserve a better club but I will point again to the quality of concessions which are mediocre at best. The Bay Area has a wealth of culinary treats, none of which are featured among the fare at SAP center. I highly recommend you check out what’s being offered at Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle. The food there is local, unique and flavorful.

    Great overall experience

by K Power on 12/16/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

Great game night! It was exciting! Food was actually good (chicken strips+fries combo) and portion was descent. However drinks are expensive. Access to the stadium is good, plenty of parking even for big crowd, public transportation is also nearby so you can use that too. Will come back again!

    Incredible, outstanding, amazing

by Lone_Wolf on 11/29/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

To anyone who hasn’t seen or gone to a hockey game please do yourself a favor and go. I decided to go this month to catch the game and honestly the sensation of being there and supporting the team was fantastic. Haven’t been to a game since before COVID and I’m glad to say I’ll be going more often now. Truly an incredible game, the seats I got were fantastic and staff were super friendly. I just wish I could have gotten a picture with sharkey

Old rink and expensive food and drink!

by HabsRule on 11/27/23SAP Center at San Jose - San Jose

I hadn't been to SAP Center in years and was only there to watch my hockey team finally play the SJ Sharks on a weekend! $15 for a Diet Coke and Powerade drink is quite ridiculous.
